Question

HDTV 65" dark shade on screen

Apr 1, 2017 12:15AM PDT

I bought a 65" led HDTV back in September. About 3-4 months ago while watching a hockey game I noticed while the screen was moving there were these dark areas all over the screen. The only way to describe it is I first thought it was dirt or dust so I tried to clean the tv. That's when I noticed that it's behind the screen. They appear to be verticals stripes of different sizes. Very hard to see unless using your peripheral vision. But once I noticed it I can't stop seeing it. They are present on all sources, xbox, blue ray, satellite. I have had the entire panel replaced under warranty and it is still the same except now I have this loud buzzing in my speakers(the least of my concerns at this point) but even the tech said he has seen this once before on an LG tv and what he thought the problem was was the spacing between the leds. Causing dark or dead zones in the screen. I am about to call lg back soon to demand that they either repair or replace the tv or refund me my money but wanted to try this forum to see if anybody has ever heard of this before?

Answer
Actually it sounds like a back light issue.

And when you make the call, they should have you install latest firmware and factory reset then re-test for the issue. at that point the warranty kicks in.

As to refund, the maker didn't sell you the TV so refund demands go to the seller, not maker.

That's what I thought....

^ As for the back light. And I have called them 3 different times, once when I noticed the issue, 2nd after the first "authorized repair" company came out and couldn't figure it out during this call the lady that I was speaking to from LG Inaiated that since they sent somebody out there and they couldn't see it that I would have to pay for any work or second opinion(ridiculous considering I told them the first company didn't even mess around with picture settings to troubleshoot anything) A second call after a second different "authorized repair" company came out, one tech said he sees it and his partner denied seeing it. They then suggested to make the picture quality as bad as possible and send a picture to LG so they would authorize some kind of repair...(yeah it was that ridiculous)....finally a 3rd company came out, and that's the tech I mentioned in my OP. As you can see this has been a joke from the get go whether it be the lack of professional techs that can asses a problem and troubleshoot or LG suggesting that I pay for what is technically warranty work. Point is, during those 3 phone calls at no point was I instructed to set the settings back to default....

I did however do that on my own and it didn't work. As for the refund part, Best Buy sold me the TV however Best Buy only covers the TV for 15 days after purchase, after that the warranty takes care of any issues, and at this point as I stated above it does not appear that LG or the techs they send out can fix it or even tell me exactly what the problem is. They only offer 3 "authorized" repair companies in saint louis and I've used all 3 of them. If it's a technical problem that isn't being fixed shouldn't they have to send me a new TV and if that does the same thing certainly you're not suggesting that I'm just stuck with a $1200 paper weight stuck on my wall.

Best buy.

I thought they had another offer that covered this for longer periods. You may have to raise a stink with Best Buy and push to get a refund as the set has been defective (to you) since the first day (has it?)

Now I have to broach a horrible area where folk go up in flames. HDTV does not mean perfect pictures. I see all sorts of visual issues on many sets but we don't dwell on them as HDTV is light years ahead of old ratty 480i NTSC TVs (the 60's?)

So when you shop you have to be really picky and if you keep a set too long, return can be problematic.

As to the paper weight, I can't guess how bad the issue is. It sounds not bad enough to be seen by all.

Thanks!

Yeah after taking a breath and calming down I realized what you were saying. Best has my money not LG. Here's the thing, everyone in my house and family and friends I have had over see it. The worst is while I'm watching hockey(I'm a die hard and I watch every day haha). Dark scenes you can't really see it. But yeah, I was considering bypassing Lg at this point, calling Best Buy and seeing if they could refund or exchange. And yes I understand that tv quality isn't perfect on any set but I have a 14 year old 40" Sony Bravia and a 7 year old 55" Vizio, both of those have better picture quality at this point then my new 65" lg.

And no I didn't notice the issue when I first bought it I noticed it about 3 weeks after. Thanks again!

Sony.

For some reason I always check out the Sony line when I shop.

If you haven't burned your bridges at BB, try buying their uber warranty. I'm not saying that's the ticket but do check it out as it, at one time allowed returns for months later if there was an issue like this.

Also, don't go all in.... for a refund. Settle for store credit which they are more likely to go for.
