Question

HDMI to RCA-Record on VCR

Sep 24, 2018 11:48AM PDT

This is going to seem strange, but I'm trying to go backwards and take video files and record them to VHS (I know, it's insane. But I need tapes to play on an old TV/VCR combo in a surf shop). I have two VCRs without their original remotes or manuals. Both function well. I'm needing to take video files from a laptop and transfer them on VHS tapes, so I bought the least expensive option I could find: the eXuby HDMI to RCA cable.

I connected the eXuby from a MacBook Pro to a Sony SLV-N77 VCR. The signal I'm getting past the VCR is fine. But for some reason, the VCR is recording the video in Black & White. (I can't get it to work on my other VCR, but I think that's because I need to bypass the auto channel find settings so it goes to Line In.) If it's the cable and I need to upgrade to another option, it's worth considering. Any suggestions would be helpful, but I can't abandon the project without some more effort.

Here's my (mad mad) method.

First I would make a VIDEO DVD with DVDFLICK (free, found on the web, lots of tutorials.)

This would get me to a VIDEO DVD that I would play in almost any old Video DVD player. Then I can play that to either the old TV from the DVD or connect it up to make a Video Cassette.

These cheap HDMI to RCA options are all hit or miss. Bob’s method is a better one to try.

Yeah but..

Good ideas, except I've been tasked with trying to help someone who really wants to use an old TV/VCR combo (see pic). If it were up to me, I'd use a DVD player in a heartbeat. So next question: does ANYONE think investing in another HDMI to RCA converter is worth it? I owe this person a sizable favor, so I'm good with spending a little more money, but not +$100.

Not worth the time/hassle

The aforementioned surf shop owner sounds like a family friend of mine in Santa Cruz. Beating to a different drummer! Happy

For me I have no adapters to buy since I have the usual DVD VCR units.
