HDMI switch

Oct 29, 2012 1:07AM PDT

Basically I want to maintain my dual-monitor viewing while also enabling streaming from my PC to HDTV but the graphics card only has two support slots (both taken up by the monitors)> My solution seems to be an HDMI "Switch" like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186196

Can anyone tell me how this would work? Well there are 3 "in" and 1 "out". Does this device require direct connection to my gpu? If so..I would assume the "out" slot would be from the switcher to one of the gpu slots? I can then have the other gpu slot dedicated to the main monitor and then one of the "in" device slots could go to the TV?

A switch would not meet you stated goal.

It appears you want a splitter.

Thanks so far

What is the difference?

I want to watch the movies/videos etc from my external drive in HD on my TV instead of watching them on my PC. How can I do this?

When you decide what you want it will be easier.

In one of your posts you wanted to have the display on both the display and the TV. That takes a splitter.

In this discussion you might want a switch but then one display goes off and the TV goes on.

-> Then you write about streaming to the TV. Which is something else entirely.

I want to watch HD quality torrents from my PC on my TV. the 2 gpu slots are taken up by my dual monitors...so the simplest way to connect the PC to TV for HD streaming or viewing would be what?

The simpler method

The simpler method would be to get a second computer that can stream the files from one computer to the other over a LAN. There is a whole cottage industry of set atop boxes to do exactly this. There's the Boxee Box, Western Digital has a media player, Roku, the Asus O!Play, the Raspberry Pi, and literally dozens of others. You could even just get a cheap second computer for use as a HTPC.

Ultimately that's going to be a much more flexible and easy to maintain setup.
