Question

HDMI no longer works on Laptop

Jul 1, 2017 2:18AM PDT

To sum up the problem in a nutshell :
I connect the laptop to the tv via a HDMI cord, and on the TV it is channel HDMI 3.
I also have a Telstra TBox attached to the tv.
last week the HDMI 3 channel showed as black screen when i plugged it in.
After unplugging HDMI cord 3 times and replugging, turning off tv and turning back on 3 times, turning on and off laptop 3 times also, i totally disconnected TBox at wall and tv completely then left it overnight.I used the tv as normal tv without the TBox on channel TV on screen. Next day i reconnected and replugged all. The HDMI finally worked.
A few nights ago same problem (black screen on TV channel HDMI 3)except this time HDMI will not work at all now full stop.
This time I did all as above but also changed HDMI slot on tv and tried HDMI 1 and 2. TBox is in slot HDMI 1.
I tried the laptop on my sons tv - lo and behold the computer screen shows up on his TV- although there is no audio coming from the tv still, no matter what.
Back to lounge room TV and - nope, HDMI is not working.

So cord is pretty new and I tried 3 different cords as i do have 3 HDMI cords.
(added info is sound through tv does not work and has not for some time using HDMI cord to tv - i also attach a small "music angel" portable speaker box to laptop to achieve sound. Sound does work on laptop - it is just not loud enough.)
Friend staying a few days today has plugged her Laptop into the TV and her Laptop works on HDMI channel 3 no problem. But no sound through the TV. Her sound is loud enough on the laptop though.

I have noticed when i plug in HDMI cord the laptop screen does flick off and straight back on like it knows to change to tv screen setting....although tv channel remains black.

Laptop is a: OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
System Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard
System Model Presario CQ62 Notebook PC
System Type x64-based PC
Processor AMD Phenom(tm) II N970 Quad-Core Processor, 2200 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date Hewlett-Packard F.29, 7/04/2011

TV is a : Panasonic Viera TV: Model Number TH-L37U2
( another issue - I do not have original remote control to access viera tools. I bought a Universal Remote Control : One For All urc 7110 - although i cannot access Viera tools as it is not the original remote. Also the TBox has a remote i use for the television when watching free-to-air )

All I would like is to be able to plug in Laptop HDMI cord and watch stuff on the big screen without fighting for it or tears!

Thanks for any advice
Mandy

You may be right - so another question?
Jul 1, 2017 8:34AM PDT

Although It does work on sons TV and desktop monitor, it is minus sound on everything. What you suggested sounds much simpler.

One more question then, is there an alternative way to connect to TV using the WiFi we just acquired in the house? Do I really need cords ?
Sorry, make that 2 questions then Happy

Thanks for your help though

Over WiFi requires that all the things work together.

The TV would support "casting" or you have a Chrome dongle on the TV and read how to cast from PC to that dongle (I will defer writing how as it's on the web) so for most folk the WiFi is something too hard to setup. Even I use a HDMI cable from old laptop to the TV.

Since the HDMI port is working on other TV and monitor try other than Port 3 on the TV.

Oh - I shall scrub that

and stick with HDMI then.
Thanks for your advice and help.

you had sound, but on laptop speakers

That indicates somehow you changed the sound system to analog and don't have HDMI sound enabled anymore on the laptop. Look into your laptop's sound settings.

Interesting and confusing when i look
Jul 1, 2017 9:34PM PDT

Ok I first play music in winamp
then I go to start > control panel >sound
I see the speakers ( high definition audio device ready ) with the grey vertical line to the right with green lights bouncing up and down. And also a green tick to the left of the writing. All good sounds great.
so then
I leave winamp playing
plug in hdmi cord , turn tv to HDMI 3 channel
then start > control panel > sound > press ADM HDMI output > press set default at bottom of window.
Green tick yes to the left of writing. No vertical green lights bouncing to the right.
Press Properties at the bottom of window.
popup window ADM HDMI output properties happens and in the general tab (actually all the tabs but enhancements say this) ' The device you are configuring has been removed'.

device, not driver?

If that message is true, the sounds like hardware problem.

uhoh - is that good?

Is there a way to figure that out?
I repeated that process more than once and that is definitely the same message each time...

HDMI

The laptop worked for video signal on second TV. The video is a different driver file than used for sound. You need to be sure you have sound driver for HDMI and/or DVI installed. Maybe something messed that up. You've tried several cables and the only common problem between cables and TV's is the HDMI sound driver seems missing.

As for the first TV with no video showing, You'd have to try other HDMI devices in the suspect plugs, try different cable too, and see if TV works with them.

It's an odd problem for sure and I think it's related to a problem with the first TV. Check manual and see if there's firmware that allows updating and if so, search online for it and flash/install the newer program to it.

Tested with other hdmi devices
Jul 2, 2017 9:48PM PDT

and there is no problem with sound or audio.
Friends laptop worked fine with sound and audio both showing on my tv.
Used her HDMI cord and used my HDMI cord.

Also plugged Tbox into HDMI 3 ( it works in HDMI 1 where it remains always) used my cord and sons cord and friends cord.
No issues at all.

With my laptop i just went to start>all programs> AMD Catalyst Control Centre. Simply because i wanted to see if it could help me in anyway. A little popup window happens ' AMD Catalyst Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using AMD Catalyst Control Center.' As i did this step I also have the HDMI cord plugged into the laptop plus TV and the TV is on HDMI 3 channel ( even though screen is black and silent).

I also googled a bit and looked at start > control panel > device manager > sound video and game controllers > AMD high definition audio device
Device is working properly it says when i right click on that in properties./general tab.
So looking at driver version 7.12.0.7722..... there are reports when you google on that particular driver ( year is 2015)causing issues for audio....with solutions being to roll back to previous driver and wait for later versions to come out.

Why don't you try setting sheet. For all models it available on internet with solved errors.

Go to the laptop manufacturer site
Jul 3, 2017 6:38AM PDT

Get their latest VIDEO and SOUND driver files. Remove the current sound and then afterwards the video driver files in the Device Manager. Reboot the laptop, probably to SAFE MODE and install the driver files you downloaded. Reboot. Hopefully all will be OK then.
