HDMI Issues with Sharp LC70UC30U 4K UHD LED LCD

Feb 15, 2016 4:47PM PST

Two weeks ago (February 1st 2016) we purchased a Sharp LC70UC30U 4K TV from Costco. The TV was a display model which had been in use by the store since November of 2015. In the last two weeks we have experienced a re-occurring issue with the HDMI connectivity. While watching TV, the screen will randomly go blank sometimes for about 2 seconds other times for up to 6 seconds. An HDMI icon will appear in the upper right corner of the screen which shows an image of an HDMI port and directly below the image reads, “Audio” then “Video” underneath that. To the right of the image it reads, “HDMI1” and then “HDMI 1” again in larger font directly underneath.

It does not seem to matter what the source of content we are viewing is, in that the issue happens with Netflix streaming, Direct TV signal and with our DVD player. At first we thought the issue might be a faulty HDMI port. However, after plugging our HDMI cords into various other ports the issues continued regardless of the HDMI port. Initially I had run the HDMI cables into our surround sound receiver and then to the TV. I thought the issue might be caused by a handshake issue between the receiver and the TV and therefore have since connected all HDMI cables directly to the given source; this did not correct the issue.

We have contacted both Costco Concierge Services (the retailer we purchased the TV from) as well as Sharp Customer Service. Costco’s tech had us unplug the TV and hold down the power button for 30 seconds and then plug the TV back in. Sharp’s tech had us unplug the TV, press and hold the enter button and the volume – button at the same time and plug the TV back in. The tech said that this should have caused an “S” to appear on the screen however the “S” never appeared. The tech also had me check the current version which was 14000 (this was the up to date version).

Any thoughts as to what might be causing the issue or how it can be fixed?

Did you ever get this fixed? I have the exact same situation right down to great deal at Sams Club in late Feb.
Would love a little advice.
Thanks

Needed new mother board

Yup it took a technician to come out and put in a new motherboard into the tv. Have not had the issue since.

HDMI Cable Issue?
Feb 15, 2016 6:35PM PST

Are you saying it is defiantly not a cable issue?

In the article you referenced it mentions how there are only four basic types of HDMI cables:

High-speed (also called Category 2)
High-speed (also called Category 2) with Ethernet
Standard-speed (Category 1)
Standard-speed (Category 1) with Ethernet

What if the cables that I am using are Category 1 cables, would that potentially cause the issue that I am experiencing? Or would a Category 1 cable on a 4K TV show any picture at all?

Why aren't you pursuing the warranty?
Feb 15, 2016 8:04PM PST

Costco is known for having reputable warranty service for the products they sell. Or does this particular display model not come with any warranty? Push them on this- they are normally better than most retailers IME and O.

In the event it is not the TV

Yes it came with a warranty and it can be returned easily. However, we got a screaming deal on the tv and if the tv is not the issue then a new tv is not going to solve the problem. If the tv is the problem or the cause can not be determined then yes it will be returned.

You bought a 4K HDTV not knowing what 4K actually is

Almost none of your content thus far is 4K. Try another HDMI cable. If the problem continues, you can be 100% certain it's the TV. Keep in mind this is one reason why some avoid floor models.

Always do research before diving into electronics purchases.

Sorry

But after running into hit and miss with cables too many times over the years, I know to carry in a shiny new cable to be sure it's not that. There are folk that demand to know it is or is not the cable and dive into categories and more. I have to keep it simple.

AmazonBasics HDMI cables are under 10 bucks and it's cheaper than any service call I've seen to date. Most calls are 100+ for the tech to step into the home. It's why we try this.

After that test it's back to the maker warranty and let them deal with the issue.
