Question

HDMI connection (laptop to TV) no longer working like before

Apr 10, 2017 10:32AM PDT

Hi everyone,

I frequently connect my laptop to my TV through HDMI without any troubles. But today when I connected my laptop, I was only getting a black screen on my TV.
I checked the HDMI cable and it works fine with my cable box and I've also been looking through my computer settings and even updated my drivers but still no luck. Tried connecting with a different TV and that works, so I'm thinking the problem is TV sided?

I should note though, after messing with the refresh rate and trying 50i or 60i or anything with an "i" Hz instead of a "p", I was able to project my laptop screen to my TV screen. But... The image was bad and the audio was cracking and so it wasn't really viewable. At least not like before.
Does anyone have any idea as to what has happened?

Please help,

Jitse

No make, models of all things.

So I'm left to guess this laptop runs Windows. Use System Restore to the date it worked.

Sorry

My apologies, I wasn't exactly sure what specific details you would require.

This is a fairly new MSI laptop running Windows 10 trying to connect with a Toshiba TV.
Tried System Restore, but it keeps giving me an error saying that it did not complete successfully.

Any other ideas? And feel free to ask me for more details.

System Restore is broken by

Many antivirus suites (shame on them for not telling us about this.)

Also check the switch noted below.

To get SR working varies with why it is broken. Tell more.

Only one antivirus
Apr 10, 2017 11:52AM PDT

Windows Defender is the only antivirus on my laptop (I've read somewhere in the past that it's really good and that many people underestimate it.)

Going to do the SR again and I'll make a screenshot of the error, give me a second.

About HDMI HDCP and something I run into once in a while.

did you switch the TV over....

...to the HDMI port the computer was plugged into?

I think so yeah
Apr 10, 2017 11:45AM PDT

Do you mean like "HDMI 1", "HDMI 2", "AV1", and so forth on the TV?
If that's what you're asking then yeah, I merely unplugged the HDMI from my cable box (which was and is still working fine) and plugged it in my laptop. This used to work flawlessly up until now.

Wait, this fired the old neurons. What about....
Apr 10, 2017 11:49AM PDT

HDMI is a protected link and has been known to lock other connections out when we switch like that.

AS A TEST, leave that HDMI cable unplugged then power off the TV. Now remove the power to the TV (remove the plug from the wall.) Wait 5 to 10 minutes and plug it is. This lets the HDMI chips reset and force the HDCP handshake when you try again with your laptop.

I'll give you an update in a few minutes, thanks!

No luck

Tried it twice but both times to no avail. Going to make a screenshot of the SR error now.

OK, does this display on other HDMI displays?
