HDMI and Component Hookup

I would like to utilize my HDMI compatible HDTV and DVD player, but the A/V receivers compatible with HDMI are far from cheap. If i was to purchase a receiver with some speakers, is there a way i could still hook up my TV to DVD player via HDMI and connect my DVD player to the A/V receiver via component?
If some one can answer this or give a better solution i would be thankful.

Run the HDMI cable to the TV and run a seprate audio cable to the reciver. Use optical or coax for the audio to the reciver.

I was thinking about different combinations of input/output...would this work too?

- DVD player video and audio line into the tv--> separate audio line out to reciever

- And for those reciever + dvd player all in one HTIBS: video + audio out to tv (this should work) and lets say a game console with its own video/audio out to the tv.

I know the latter situation works with my wega CRT (not hdtv) and I just disable the speakers on the tv and the sound comes through the reciever when I play games--> would this work with higherend HDTVs? Thanks...if this post is confusing, I'll refine it on request.

I think i understand the posts. If this is true...do you mean that i should hook up the dvd player and tv via hdmi ....and after that hook up the a/v receiver to the tv's audio out jack? I'm sorry for not knowing more about this subject but this will be my first home audio system and i would like to purchase a good system and understand how to hook it up.

hook up your cable box or satelite to the tv using
hdmi... then out of the cable or sat.. plus the dvd
player hook up digital audio out from the units to the
amp... this will allow you to hear dolby digital through you stereo system.
