Bear in mind that pass through (the TV) of high def sound is never a sure thing but it will give you the best with what you have now.

Hello,
I'm absolutely not a techno guy but have a home theatre system with a Yamaha RX-V730 that is about 8 yrs old. It doesn't have HDMI. Is there a work around? Is there a HDMI adapter for this issue? If so, will it work as well as buying a new receiver? I want the best quality with what I have to work with. I have a 60" Samsung plasma 7 series, boston acoustic VR950 towers and CRC7 center with a new Panasonic blue ray player.
I am looking at the Denon recievers since they seem to be what Cnet and others are recommending.

Using your current receiver means you would lose out on the newer audio tracks on many blu ray soundtracks. On the other hand, if you still lack rear surrounds & sub, it's a non-issue since you have no proper surround field to begin with/very few sound effects. (Or did you leave out some of your current equipment?) In this sense buying a new receiver makes no sense.
Upgrade to surrounds & sub and the new Denon might make sense.
If you have other questions feel free to ask...

Tks for your input!!!!
I do have rears and a velodine sub. Even though I hate to toss an 8 yr old perfectly good recievers, the best thing to do is upgrade.
Any other input will be very welcome![]()
Given the strong feature set now on a typical $300 AV receiver, it's hard not to take a long hard look at what you would get in such an upgrade. I say go for it
.
When you finally upgrade, also take a second look at how you have you speakers positioned in the room/HT space. There are some basic guides at Crutchfield & elsewhere on the web that illustrate how one can improve the sound field, especially the rears (glad you have them, btw). Also look at how the HDTV is placed. When seated on the nearby couch (etc.), your eyes should be looking as close as possible (drawing a line straight ahead) to the upper third of the display. This might seem a bit on the low side compared to most, but you (& your neck) will enjoy the results IME and O. Understandably though, folks might not want to spend $ on new furniture to achieve this goal, but it's worth it.
Ha! Now I'm on a roll!!! I'm looking at the demon avr 3313 or 3312or 3311![]()
Since I'm gonna upgrade I thought more power may help push better?
Funny u should mention the tv height. I e always had it low but because of the rm config in my new home and some coersion I was talked into hanging it over the mantel so its gonna be high but ill angle it down.
I hope I'm on the right track with the denon. Seems to have good reviews and alot of bang for the buck!!!!
It's most certainly not the dealbreaker for most. Denon's are great- you will definitely be pleased.
Just to give you the straight dope on hanging a flat panel on the high side, it's probably one of the worst if not the worst places to be mounted. (Actually, I would love to kill the first interior decorator or installer who suggested it, LOL) Over time it's bad for you neck/back and crappy for good movie/TV viewing. It does however 'fit' spaces though.
Enjoy
Really appreciate your input![]()
I'm not sure if I can return the favor but I manage a Binswanger Glass Branch and have been in the business for 25 yrs if u ever need anything, take a look at our website and let me know. Ill do what I can to help![]()
I did pull the trigger on the denon avr 3313 ci along with hdmi cabling and hdmi wall plates I found on cnet.
Looking forward to hooking it up this weekend![]()
I wassnt sure of choosing the 3313 or 3312 or 3311
Thanks again!
Ok. I got the denon. I am going crazy with signals. I know I have the hdmi hooked up right from the blu ray to reciever to tv. I had Visio but no audio now I have great audio but no Vidio!!!!
Ahhhhhhh! Tv says chech cable but they are brand new and I had video earlier?
It's gotta b a denon setting? Pulled manual up but not helping.
I'd really appreciate some expertise on this since I'm impaired in this area![]()
Let's start again with the basics.
Denon model please, and list all connections/cable types. All other components in your system as well.
Did you assign the input(s) on the HDTV(?)
Denon avr 3313ci, new Panasonic dmp bdt 230, Samsung series 650 60" plasma, Boston vr950 mains, Boston crc 7 center, velodine dls 4000r, all new mediabridge high speed hdmi with Ethernet.
Hdmi from blu ray to # 3 blu ray in at reciever. Hdmi out monitor 1 arc from reciever to hdmi port 3 at tv.
Ha! I just reset the processor. I got audio and video now.
I'm playin the movie ice age which is a good demo video.
The reciever automatically sets to Dolby digital. Not sure if this is the optimal setting for movies? Do you have any preferences in optimizing what's being played for Movies or music or tv? I think the reciever discifers automatically?
You are in the zone, it sounds like. Congrats.
Whether or not a particular sound setting sounds right is definitely up to the listener. DD might be 'optimal' for some types of media, but not for others. Play with it for a week or so and bring in some other listeners in your family to get a broader idea of what might work best for your setup & particular movies, streams, blu ray discs, etc. Speaker placement can also affect what the listeners hear as well, so experiment with that aspect too before you finalize where everything will be mounted.
You have discovered a useful tool. If you suddenly notice that your audio/video settings are amiss, simply reset the receiver. Just write down your settings so it's faster to get up and running again.

O ya, once I get all the in wall done I also have a hd with Ethernet dvr from cable company and a belkin power management unit. I also ordered Boston a26 bookshelf speakers to add to the surround.
