Question

HDD Total LBA Changes Frequently

Mar 28, 2017 5:53AM PDT

Hi.I have a ST2000LM003 HN-M201RAD HDD on my laptop. The SMART monitoring software reports every few minutes a change in Total LBA Read and Write between 94 and 100.Is that normal??

If the numbers get lower, it's not good.

If they get higher and your run Windows, check in resource monitor what processes are reading and writing to the SSD. Only then you know if it's OK or not.
Can you tell the results of your research?

Software Relation
Mar 28, 2017 6:19PM PDT

It's not SSD drive,Its regular HDD.Can you explain what is relation between softwares using HDD and SMART?
Could it be a software problem?.I don't think so.

Answer
That's a bad sign.
Mar 28, 2017 9:30AM PDT

As bad sectors and tracks are removed this number falls.

It's not a good sign or rather it's a sign you want to move to a new drive and see if this one can be replaced under warranty.

Warranty
Mar 28, 2017 6:21PM PDT

Warranty is good idea but I don't think they replace drive only for SMART attributes change until complete failure.

Normal
Mar 28, 2017 6:23PM PDT

Could it be normal for this series of HDDs??

- Collapse -
Only a sales force would call it normal.
Mar 29, 2017 9:11AM PDT

I would call the drive suspect and untrustworthy.

Answer
Smart
Mar 29, 2017 4:06AM PDT

It's not clear if smart is reporting this as an error or just something your seeing when running the tool.

If this is reported as an error post the entire message.

If this is something your seeing when running the tool it could be normal as it's just the reads and writes the hdd is doing.

SMART Report

This is the SMART events by ActiveSmart,The changes happen when using drive.
However in overview window it reports Good for health.

That report is about number of reads and writes.
Mar 29, 2017 1:54PM PDT

I'm going to reverse myself here.

As this is just keeping track of use, nothing is broke yet. I was under the impression the available sectors and tracks were shrinking.

Car analogy? The odometer keeps changing.

Up and Down

But why it gets up and down??I don't understand the Total LBA Read and Written meaning? Can you explain clear and simple?

Some smart firmware is buggy.

Clearly it's nonsense

241 Total LBAs Written The total number of 512-byte sectors written during the entire lifetime of the device.
242 Total LBAs Read The total number of 512-byte sectors read during the entire lifetime of the device.

I don't believe that varies from 95 to 99. It must be in the millions. My SSD (less than one year old) gives in CrystalDiskInfo a raw value for Total LBA written of E1734EF2 (and that's hexadecimal) for 1803 GB. I leave it to you to calculate if that's consistent with 0.5 kB blocks.

It also says that current = 99, worst = 99, and threshold = 0. I don't have the faintest idea what those numbers mean. Also it shows a lot lines with current = 100 (or 200), worst = 100 (or 200), threshold = 10 and raw value = 0. I don't have the faintest idea either what those numbers mean.

About the same for a HDD.

Does your LBA change??

Does the LBA change for your SSD drive??

- Collapse -
Mine does
Mar 29, 2017 4:55PM PDT

If I look at smart lba read/write I get a number.
If I look at it 10 minutes later I get a bigger number.

Makes sense to me.

Between which numbers it changes??Mine: 94~100

Numbers
Mar 29, 2017 5:41PM PDT

At the start.
Lba read = 71900
Lba write = 43519

10 minutes later.
Lba read = 71902
Lba write = 43520

Keep in mind I'm not using ActiveSmart.
Those are numbers from a simple smart reader.
No idea what 94~100 means it does not fit my smart read out.

This seems to be a program you installed.
I see they have a support feature.
Ask them what this up and down alert is trying to tell you.

Answer
SMART action
Mar 29, 2017 10:57AM PDT

I found if SMART gets into the process, sooner or later it will fail. The fact its even gets posted suggests something is ashew, so get another HD or SDD if you like to get things in order before its too late.
