HDD Space for DV Video?

Oct 5, 2005 12:52PM PDT

I am just getting ready to transfer my home movies to DVD, and will be using my PC to capture from DVD, make edits, and then burn to DVD.

Is there a "rule of thumb" to use in calculating Minutes of DV to number of MB's of HDD space? Just trying to get an idea before purchasing HDD storage this weekend. Don't want to break the bank, but want to be reasonable in terms of having space to work and get this done in an effecient manner.

Suggestions/experience much appreciated!!

You don't say what format you will be capturing in.

If it's AVI, get a 300gig drive. If it's mpeg, 120gig is probably OK. Drives are pretty cheap. You won't go wrong with 300gig or larger.

No rule of thumb...

It depends on resolutions and formats; and I agree with Kiddpeat. But even 300GB. goes very quickly if you don't clean-up after every project.

John - thanks for the info. Very helpful and the website link you provided gives a good, concise overview of the end-to-end process. Much appreciated!!

I'm still researching editing software - leaning towards to the new Sony Vegas software....we'll see how the feedback comes in.

Steve

HD space for video capture

For AVI file capture, figure 11g HD space per hour of video. For mpeg2 file capture, figure 2g HD space per hour of video. When dealing with video files, the bigger and faster the HD you can aford, the better.
