Such enclosures are a great thing. Try it.
But hard disks are not "reliable." It's not a good place to leave the one copy of what you can't lose. Maybe the case will help you retrieve your files.

My Compaq labtop of 2 years recently died and have put too much money into it to put any more in. I am buying a new HP with a 120GB HD and I was wondering if It's possible to transfer basically all of "My Documents" on my old 3.5 HD to the new computer via a hard drive enclosure. I am particulary very fond of my music and pictures and would hate to lose them. Would the hard drive enclosure 1) be able to transfer my files to the new hard drive in the new computer and 2) serve as an external hard drive to back up some important files? I am not so much interested in speed as much a reliability. The HD is 80 gb and has only about 30 gb on it right now. I really appreciate your help and input on this.
