HD tuners

Feb 8, 2005 12:12AM PST

I am currently a Direct TV subsciber. I am shopping for a new HDTV (widescreeen) and am very confused with regard to the tuners. I have been told by Direct TV that if I select a TV with an intergrated tuner(ATSC) I will not need a new receiver but must replace my dish. My local dealer has told me that I must still replace my entire system and Direct TV is incorrect. Which is correct?

Thank YOU

I'm not a direct dealer but I was under the impression that with direct you had to replace the dish and the reciever.

one nice thing

One nice thing about the hd tuner that Direct tv has, is an antenna imput. You can receive you over the air channels in hd without changing imputs. My daugther has this and it's great.

depends on the dish

I'm not certain about Dish but I know Direct tv requires a specific dish to obtain the signal (triple LND) You may already have the correct dish

directv and hdtv

I posed the exact same question a few weeks ago and didn't get a response. Regardless, I have done some research on the issue and it is my understanding that you will have to get the New Dish and Receiver from Direct tv in order to pick up the HD signal. Thus, you don't need to buy a TV with a built in tuner if you are going to use Direct tv. It is a waste of money. Someone please correct me if I am wrong

Talked to Direct TV
Feb 9, 2005 10:11AM PST

I E-mailed Direct TV technical help desk an the response received said that if I purchase a HDTV set that is classified as "Intergrated" I would only need to purchase an new 18" by 20" dish. I have reqested them to define what they consider "Intergrated". Still confused.

Also I would Like opions on Mitsubishi and RCA HDTVs

Thanks

Integrated = HD Tuner Built-In
Feb 16, 2005 3:37AM PST

After some research, I found out that integrated means the tv has a built-in HD (ATSC) tuner. Add a UHF antenna to tv with an integrated hd tuner, you can pick up OTA HD broadcasts.

HD-ready tv's need an additional HD tuner to show HD broadcasts. This can be in many ways, a separate HD tuner or a 'box' from a satellite company that has the capacity to receive and show HD broadcasts.

Hope that helps.

HD Tuners
Feb 12, 2005 4:46AM PST

I am a DirecTV subscriber as well and have done some research on this subject. Based on my understanding it sounds like your local retailer is wrong. If you purchase a TV with a built-in HD tuner, you only need to get a new Direct TV dish with a 3 port LNB. Based on my discussions with DirecTV, though, their HD programming package is not worth it. They only offer 5 channels of HD programming for $10.99 a month (unless you wish to add HBO or Showtime in HD). I would consider getting an indoor HD antenna and getting your local network broadcasts until the DirecTV HD programming is becomes more extensive. The cost is only a one time expense of about $40 and the feed is free.

new HD satellite

I think Directv is launching a couple new satellites in the near future and will have expanded HD programming. I think it will be the best option in the long term
just my 2 cents...

First u need a new dish - sometimes all u need is an add-on piece to the dish - anyway should be less than $100, just for the installation, the equipment should be free - remember everything is negotiable. With a relatively inexpensive antenna and the dish, you get most of the HD stations - it's still not much but more being added daily. Unfortunatley we have to wait until 2007 for the Directv new satellite. In the meantime, u can still get Pay Per view HD as well
