HD problem

Jul 27, 2004 4:16PM PDT

my friend messed around with my jumper cables on my hd, and it started to tell me i had a hd problem when i would boot off of it. now it just freezes when its scanning my hd to boot up. so i got another hd made it the master, and my hd the slave, and when i boot off of that my comp detects each drive as master and slave (the way i want it to be) and when im in windows off that drive, the slave drive doesnt show up in my computer

any ideas?

It sounds as if when the first harddrive was originally set up somebody used the boot management program called ezdrive to set it up with from the floppy disk that comes with new harddrives. This has created boot management on a drive that is no longer the boot drive and windows can't see that drive when it's set as a slave unless the NEW boot drive also has that program installed on it.

I would suggest that you get that floppy disk and use it to remove the ezdrive program from the slave drive...if you can't locate the floppy disk, you can download the program from the harddrive manufacturer website and put it on a floppy disk yourself.

This program was originally intended to be used on older computers where the bios couldn't see the whole drive as larger and larger harddrives were being made. I don't understand why it's still being included on the floppy disk that comes with the drives since most newer computers have bioses that don't have issues like that anymore. The other tools on the disk work just fine for setting up harddrives or copying them, but many people get confused at the screen options and install the boot manager program by accident because they don't sometimes understand what it's for.

Normally, once you have the program up on the screen, you can click the Install EZDRIVE button, and then will get the option to UNINSTALL EZDRIVE from the next screen you see, so make sure you choose the correct drive from the list since you want to uninstall from the SECOND or SLAVE drive. Once uninstalled, remove the floppy disk and reboot the computer. Your data on that drive will be left intact...it will only remove the boot information from it so windows can then see the drive.

Some HDs had the added jumper(if applicable) to tell the system if single or dual drives physically present. The HD manual/guide will explain this and on some HDs the decal besides master and slave setup. To really check the HD status, allow it to be the only one in the system and configure it properly. If it still doesn't work, using FDISK find out the status of your HD. Maybe it got corrupted, Last, if none of this helps, fall back and try to reformat, etc. to see if it recovers as a fresh bare HD, if not then very possible true damage is done or severe misconfiguation.
Improper handling of the HD may cause "static damage/ESD" to th HD componets. Check all connections, etc. or try another HD cable, 80-connector perferred.
