Hd enclosure

Window xp service pack 3 500 meg ram running on a Dell 2400.
I bought a 3.5 Hd enclosure. When I first plug it in, it found new hardware and loaded the drivers. It worked for a day then stopped being recognized in My Computer. I tried both front and back USB plugs with no results. I tried it on another computer and got the same results. I set the enclosure back and got a replacement. I now get the sound that a device has been connected then I get another sound about 15 seconds later that it has been disconnected. The second unit has never been recognized in My Computer. I have tried several different Hd's with the same results. Is it another bad unit or am I doing something wrong?
