HD DVD (upconverter) anyone help me!!!

May 19, 2005 5:21PM PDT

Hi:

I read a couple of reviews here in the forum. I have a Sanyo 30" (HT30744) and a Philips 26" (26PW8402). I'm looking for a DVD upconverter with HDMI output. First, is it really worth buying one?
Or should I stick to my progressive DVD player. Second, what brand of HD DVD do you guys recommend? Third, can I hook up a DVD upconverter to a TV without HDMI or DVI? Or are there any cable that allow me to hook it up somehow?

I would like to get the best possible picture out of the DVD upconverter

Thanx

With 26" and 30", I don't think it will help that much also if the TV/s don't have HDMI then the hdmi on the dvd is going to do anything. Just my 2 cents.

Well you have a lot of questions but supplied very little info on what you have for equptment.
The best you can get from a DVD is 740x480. The best way to get this is using componet cables to a HDTV monitor.
A good scan converter will cost about $1000, and you have to be sure that your HDTV monitor will handel it's output. Remember a scan converter CAN'T add quality it converts formats.
The HD-DVD format is still up for grabs as the major companies are stll trying to get ONE standard format, wait.
"Third, can I hook up a DVD upconverter to a TV without HDMI or DVI? Or are there any cable that allow me to hook it up somehow?" What kind of TV are you talking about here? A regular TV or a DHTV? There is a big difference. John

...HDMI

I do have a HDTV with an HDMI hookup. I have connected both HDTV with component cable and I do not see any difference in the image. By HD-DVD I was trying to refer to a High definition DVD player and not the new format that is still in development.

Is it true, I can not get better image from a DVD upconverter on a 30" HDTV. With OTA signal i do notice it's better than a DVD signal. That's what the other person in this message tell's me

Thank

I didn't mean to mislead.

I was just suggesting that the smaller the screen the less of a difference you will notice. Upconversion isn't exactly as though you have high definition (which OTA signal was).

I had a terrible d.v.d. picture with my 65" hi-def tv. so I finally bought a Denon 2910 player with D.V.I. output and a giffen d.v.i. switcher and the picture is stunning . for some reason componit vidio interface cables dont do the job
