HD CRT to Plasma

Jun 14, 2009 1:10PM PDT

so the sad day has came, my sony kd34xbr960 is died, with a bad D or B board.

And I had to go buy a new plasma TV the other day, so I picked up a panasonic 42S1 and you would think it would be a much better TV sence the sony was 6 or 7 years old.

but I have to say it not much better, yes its bigger and 1080p but that only goes so far, black level is not the same and color is less accurate, and for some reason I now get color banding, and not sure why.

snyways just wanted to share this part of my life with you all.

good day

Why don't you...

...have it calibrated and then report back you findings? Definitely check all your cabling/connections regarding the banding. It's way too new to have that be an issue out of the box. Cable boxes are also notoriously flaky culprits IME.

Seriously though, the G10 would have been a better choice from what I have seen. That said, Sony CRTs are difficult to beat per se. I always tell friends looking for a non-flatscreen HDTVs (& SDTVs) to grab them when they appear cheap via craigslist, etc.

I dont think calibration will help to much

but I will be getting it done.

I have tried Cinama and custom modes, my DVE disc and played with the color temp in the service menu, still not as good in color, but I think it has to do with the lack of black level, altough panasonic is one of the best this year in black level proformance, its just not a tube.

the biggest and hardest thing to get use to is standard DVD, its pretty bad looking compared to the tube, it looked very washed out, luckly I have a good DVD player that helps with some of the problems.

but as for the color banding, Ive tryed two HDMI cables and two diffrent component cables, and I use a dish VIP622 HDbox, I think its in the broadcast or box, and maybe I just didnt see it before, not sure but it not really that bad, and I can live with it.

but I am going to play with it for a few days and see what I think, I may just have to save some more $$$ and move up to the G10, but I didnt have the $$$ when I got, plus the G10 is a little hard to find in a 42inch for some reason.
thanks
