HD camcorder still images

I am looking at the new canon vixia hf s200, seems to be a great choice but with its claimed 8mp still image resolution (although seems other new panasonic and sony have 10-14mp), will that be good enough to replace a regular digital camera: specifically image resolution for printing and shutter speed especially when you want to snap quick photos for kids?

I am also looking at the hf s200 and have the same question so instead i might get the Canon Rebel T2i which is 18megapixels and shoots 1080p video. (DSLR)
