HD Camcorder - HD TV Compatibility

Nov 4, 2007 8:37AM PST

I recently purchased a Sony HDR-HC7 HDV 1080i camcorder. I am starting to shop for a HD TV.
I am a bit confused about compatibility. Is a 1080i/p TV required for optimal camcorder playback? Or is the quality of the TV, either 720 or 1080, what determines playback quality?
Thanks for the help.
Brian

so... how about when you are shopping for the TV,

take the camcorder and cables with you - and you can decide if the 1080i camcorder needs to connect to a 1080i HDTV for optimum performance (which is what I have) or if cannecting a 1080i camcorder to a 1080p HDTV or 720p HDTV looks better or worse... and let us know.

I've not connected my camcorder to anything other than my 1080i 42" Panasonic via component video connections, so I really don't know...

your camcorder 1920x1080 pixels right?(2.07 million pixels)? so if you bought a 1080i tv i think the most pixels 1080i tvs have is 1366x768 (1.04 million pixels) but if you bought a 1080p tv it would have 2.07 million pixels so if it uses twice as many pixels as a 1080i tv it will be better. And get a blu ray player too Happy

Thanks for your help, Bageleaterkkjji. So my wife was ordering breakfast, and had a brain fart where she couldn't remember the name for bagel. She asked the server "what's the name for the round bread with the hole in it?" The server replied, "you mean a donut?"
Thanks again.

That must be one of the chess master beating-type IBM servers to correctly guess what she was thinking about Happy j/k

Jokes aside, if your camcorder is 1080i then technically, there won't be a difference between playing it on a 1080i TV and a 1080p TV. There might be, if the 1080p TV is a more expensive unit with better imaging components. Unless you plan on experiencing 1080p content in the future (blu-ray, HD-DVD, PS3, Xbox 360 etc.) don't really bother getting one as there are many good 720p/1080i TV out there. Also, 1080p vs. 720p/1080i on TV less than 40" is nothing much to talk about. That's another thing to keep in mind depending on the size you're going for.

Btw, don't be fooled by Sony's "FullHD" claims, especially on camcorders. "FullHD" does not at all mean the device is 1920x1080p. Anything that's got a 1080 vertical resolution, whether interlaced (i) or progressive (p) is "FullHD" in Sony's books. I've seen Sony camcorders labeled "FullHD" and in their specs the resolution is 1440x1080i!

Watch out!

I guess I have a folllow up or a different question. I am looking at getting a Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder. I have a smasung 50" DLP 720p. My question is the current camcorder we have (canon ZR85) the videos are not quite well defined. Images at a distance not clear. Would I get a better clear more defined picture with the new canon. Or would it not be any better.
