Having a problem with USB ports windows vista

Hello everyone!

I have got a Acer E Series E210 computer which was running windows XP, so since there are no more updates for windows XP I decided to change operating systems to Vista

The first thing I did was run a compatibility test on line with Microsoft to see if Vista would run on this computer and the test came back saying yes Vista will run on this computer

So far everything is good!

The only problem I seem to be having is with the USB ports

I went into device manger and it is saying everything is working and drivers are up to date

Some things I can plug into a USB port and it works and some don't, only one make of flash drive works which is a integral 256 MB out of three different makes and only one external hard drive which is a iomega 350 GB Drive works out of three that I have tried so far

Also the O2 plug and play internet Donegal works OK

External DVD drive works this is a LITEON DVD / CD rewritable drive

Can't use a USB keyboard or mouse, If I plug in the keyboard it will work but the bottom task bar flickers and you can't click on the start menu button to open programs

How can I fix this problem please!

All that detail

Was summed up with you telling the make and model. Now it just bogs down your post.

In short you need the install plan for Windows (pick any version) but it's far from intuitive. The maker should have such details but here I have the GENERIC VERSION.

Install Windows (pick any version and install of the OS is all over the web so I don't need to detail that here.)

Now, the generic install plan is as follows.
1. Windows.
2. Motherboard drivers.
3. Device drivers.
4. HELPER APPS!!!!

Item 4 may be new to some but only the maker can reveal the exact drivers and sometimes the order to install. If this was mine I'd see if the BIOS needed an update before I start step 1.

Hi Bob

Sorry about all the information, not been in one of these help pages before, a friend told me to put as much info in the post I can find about the computer so that's what I did

I will be talking to him tomorrow lol.

Thank you for the reply Bob, I will update the BIOS first, will let you know how I get on

Thank you

I don't mind looking into this further

But the model is not on the Acer web site I tried. Since you own this my bet is you would have the model's home and driver page bookmarked. Share that and I'll see if I can find more install notes.

Also consider

one of the newer Linux distros as an upgrade. Many former XP users like myself have moved over to Linux. The newest ones are better than XP and a whole lot safer.
