Question

Have you heard of cocoshamen

by MelC921 / April 18, 2018 3:39 PM PDT

Yesterday I downloaded docstopdf...ever since when I click on the safari icon the apple site opens, also when I hit the "+" sign to open a new window the same apple site opens. I saw in extensions cocoshamen and clicked uninstall but nothing has changed. Is it malware and can I delete it? I'm running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6

installing apps

Thank you so much for the above assistance!! I'm having some trouble opening malwarebytes so I did open the link...besides that, you mentioned "asking" before installing apps...I'm not sure how you do that...many apps seem so legit. How can I either ask in the future and/or determine any that I already have??( which are not many, thankfully).
Thanks in advance
Melanie

Ask in Apple forums about apps.
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / April 18, 2018 5:40 PM PDT
In reply to: installing apps

If you asked here I'm sure folk would have mentions Apple's own PDF feature as well as the shady app you mentioned.

The link covers both OSes. You need to follow the link about "If you are using an Apple computer running Mac OS, then use the following steps How to get rid of browser hijacker, pop-ups, ads from Mac"

https://www.malwarebytes.com takes you to the Malwarebytes site.
Hit the green download button
That puts a file into your downloads folder, the file is called Malwarebytes-Mac-3.2.26.11.pkg
This is an installer package which will step you through the process of installing the app.

I just downloaded it and did NOT get the message stated above. Follow the instructions and accept all the defaults.
Once finished, the installer will offer to move the installer app to the trash. Do it.

Once installed, it will launch. Do NOT click on the "upgrade now" button. The basic MWB is free.

Any problems, just post here

A quick scan once a week will keep you clear of most of the nasty stuff.

Allow it to update itself, when it asks, or choose "Check for updates" from the menu bar

Hi! Quick question about this -- do you know of any way I can do this if my Macbook is from 2009 and version 10.6.8 -- it wouldn't let me do the MWB because my OS isn't new enough Sad
Thank you!

Whoever told you that your MacBook couldn't be updated
by mrmacfixit Forum moderator / May 22, 2018 3:35 PM PDT
In reply to: HELP

was sadly mistaken.

ALL the 2009 MacBook and MacBook Pro models are capable of upgrading to 10.11, some to 10.12, so you should have no problem getting your machine up to at least 10.8 or 10.9

Like MeiC921 did, I also downloaded Doc to pdf as well and when you download this program I did not see an option to say 'No' I do not want any other software with this download let alone get the option to 'Opt Out'. I just noticed it in my Applications folder in 'Finder' tonight. I would love it if you can tell me how I access Apple's version of doc-to-pdf, please?

How to create a PDF file.
by mrmacfixit Forum moderator / April 25, 2018 4:43 AM PDT

It's actually very easy and does not involve an app that you can access.

Simply create the document that you want to turn into a PDF and save it.
Now print it.
At the bottom left corner of the window that appears when you hit print you will see a dropdown button that says PDF
Click that and you will see all the PDF options displayed.
Choose the one you want, Save as PDF is handy and follow the instructions from there.

You're done.

Holler back if you have problems

How do I get rid of cocshamen?
by Joincnet2016 / June 5, 2018 10:18 AM PDT

I removed it from Finder and deleted it from trash but it still is my default browser. I tried their uninstall and that came up with a warning that it was malware. What do I do to get rid of this?

Besides the answer above.
