Given the costs involved and few complaints I can only guess what's amiss here.
I looked at our Kindle and found 5 (five) Volts on the wires. Far from deadly but I bet you can find a lawyer that would back you up.

I have one of the earlier Kindles and recently unplugged the charging cored and discovered that the plastice around the wires had deteriorated. As I held the cord bits of plastic fell into my hand exposing more of the wire. I could have been executed if I had touched a deteriorated place as I unplugged the cord! I called Amazon who said this problem and that they would send a new cord. Then I talked with my mother who also has an early Kindle and the same thing had happened to her cord,but she had originally thought that she or someone in her household had caused the cord to fray. This is a serious and potentially deadly problem that Amazon is not responding to. They should have recalled these cords long ago. They are being criminally negligent. Angela Thompson (nahene)
