Old mobiles are not too bad
Aug 16, 2013 7:24PM PDT

My partner dropped her old Nokia 3310 into the bath. It stopped working and would not restart so I stripped it down, cleared most of the water with paper towels, then stood it on a radiator for an hour or two. When I re-assembled it, the phone worked perfectly and is still working.

We still use our old Nokias, it's all we need. Most new phones are not so sturdy.

I have been caught out in the rain and my "dumb" cellphone has gotten saturated. My solution is to take out battery and SIM card and dry on "hot" w/ a hair dryer. Two (2) 5 minute sessions of high, hot heat and voila the cell is back working again. I use my "dumb" phone for calls and texting only....don't know about "smart" phones but this works for me. Thx.

Sunk!
Aug 16, 2013 10:30AM PDT

I had my cell phone with me sailing when we hit a big puff in the middle of a gybe and the boat rounded up and sank. It was just a blackberry so no great loss. Got the boat back, but the phone was toast.

Washing Machine
Aug 16, 2013 12:48PM PDT

I put my iPhone 4 in the pocket of my bath robe when the dog wanted to go out in the back yard quick one morning. A little while later, while doing laundry, I decide to put my robe in too at the last minute. I got back to my bedroom and reached in my robe pocket for my phone, and only then thought - Oh No! It's all in the wash machine!
Ran to the washing machine, which had filled with water, but luckily the agitation hadn't started quite yet. Found my phone, pulled it out of the soggy robe ocket, took the case off, wiped the phone and set in in a dish of rice. I kept it in the rice for 3 days, turning it over and burying it again every so often.
Turns out, it was fine! My son told me to take the SIM card out, but try as I might, just could not get that out. Tried various tools and silverware around the house, but nothing helped. So it went into the rice with the SIM card in it. At first, it seemed like the sound had a touch of static, but that lasted only a day or two. So then my son said to stick headphones in that audio hole, and remove them later on, like a day or so later. Maybe that helped, but the static went away.
In addition, I have dropped my phone several times . . . on cement sidewalk, on blacktop driveway, on ceramic tile, and once it even bounced off the edge of the bathroom sink counter and then bounced on the ceramic tile floor a couple times before it came to rest.
I can only think my iFrogz case helped it through all the torture I accidentally inflicted - and give that case all the credit. Got it at K-mart on a clearance sale for a song! My next case, when I need one will likely be that same brand.

Cell Phone Water Disasters
Aug 16, 2013 1:18PM PDT

My cell phone died after getting caught in an unexpected thunderstorm. It was in my purse and everything got wet. Tried all the remedies (rice, etc.) but it was dead.

Then my husband threw his work jeans in the wash with his cell phone in the pocket. I did rescue it fairly quickly, but a couple of minutes in water ruined it.

I think cell phone makers should manufacture all water proof cell phones. This is just a total rip off. You have to get a new phone. Your loss is their gain.

There are so many ways a cell phone can accidentally get wet. Water proof cell phones are a must. They should be standard.

Forget the rice remedy! Ridiculous.

Never managed to get any cell phone wet.

I have used cell phones since the days when they were the size of a small case that you had to lug around.
Throughout my professional life as an HSES professional I have used several cell phones, currently I use 3 (three) cell phones, two for work and one is private, none of them is waterproof. Also for work I have a satellite phone (Inmarsat) which is waterproof. I always carry my phones in special holsters attached to my belt, therefore they can never be forgotten in any clothing pockets ending up in the washing machine. Also when it is raining, even in heavy torrential rains, the holsters keep the phones dry and safe. No phone call is so important that I would answer it in the pouring rain, except for my dedicated emergency response work phone that has a specific signal. When I am traveling on/over water my phones go into a special watertight bag which floats, attached to my survival gear, so should there be any incident the phones will be OK. Prevention is the best way to keep your phones dry and working, in an emergency they may save your life.

Both the wife and I have...
Aug 16, 2013 2:46PM PDT

She dropped hers in the toilet at work, but the bag of rice thing worked like a champ for getting it usable again.

Mine was an early smartphone, made by Palm. I was walking through the kitchen with a stack of books, phone resting safely (I thought) on top. As I walked by the sink full of dishes and dishwater, I turned, and the Palm went sliding sweetly into the dishwater.

Had the accidental replacement plan, and had a new phone within three days, but wow... for a bit there I was pretty darn upset. The original phone was ruined.

No, but...
Aug 17, 2013 10:15AM PDT

No, but I've found a few other pretty creative ways to kill them. The best was just after a holiday. The next day, I couldn't find my phone anywhere. My mother-in-law called later that day and asked me why I called her at five o'clock in the morning and just made strange "crunching" noises before hanging up. I surmised that the phone was swept off the kitchen counter into the under-counter garbage can, put out with the trash that evening, then, the garbage truck's "jaws-of-death" compacted it, pressed "redial", and gave her a last minute call for help along with its final dying gasp.

Dropped into a Parisian Toilet
Aug 17, 2013 1:07PM PDT

I had my Nokia in a breast pocket as I leaned over to flush the toilet in a Parisian hotel and unfortunately it did a swallow dive into the liquid only filled (thankfully) toilet bowl. After a short burst of extreme expletives, I plucked up the courage to plunge my hand under the waterline to retrieve it. I immediately ran it under the tap in the sink to rinse it off and washed my hands thoroughly! Immediately, I was heading off to catch a flight, so I dabbed it dry with some paper towels as well as I could and tried switching it on. Unsurprisingly it didn't work, however, after I got home to Scotland, I took the battery and sim card out and left all components on top of a radiator for a couple of hours to dry out. After re-assembly, amazingly it worked. That was 3 years ago and it's still going strong. All hail Nokia!
