Have one HDMI on TV...what should I use it for?

Feb 20, 2006 5:37AM PST

I just bought a new 42" plasma HDTV (Samsung HP-R4272) and a Sony HD-Conversion DVD Player (DVPNS70H). (Both TV and DVD player have one HDMI component.) DirecTV will be here tomorrow to install the HD dish and its components tomorrow. I've been doing some research, and the DirecTV component also has an HDMI component.

So, my question is, what should I use the HDMI cable on? The DVD player or the DirecTV HD for the HD channels? I plan on watching HD television channels and DVDs equally. Thanks.

Your dvd player will probably only display upconversion through the hdmi cable, I would guess your hd box has a component out too. So try the dvd player on hdmi and the set top hd box on component or dvi. Make sure both are setr to output at your tv's native resolution (probably 720p or 768p)

I have just hooked up hd directv to my system...
Feb 20, 2006 8:08PM PST

I have the sony 50"sxrb, Harmon kardon avr435 and the high def directv receiver. I have the sat receiver hooked up with the hdmi directly to the tv, as well as component cables going through the Harman kardon receiver, then component to the TV. I have switched back and forth repeatedly to see if I can tell much difference and they both look outstanding. I cant tell any difference. On some shows, the color going through the component cables actually seem to look a little brighter, so I dont think you will be loosing anything to use the hdmi with your dvd, since that may be the only way it upconverts. I just have a question. Since DVD's are recorded at 480p, how can an upconverting player change the resolution to 720p? I dont know if an upconverting player actually does anything beneficial, but I admit, I am a novice.

Just a thought. . .

All DVDs have a native resolution of 480 lines. All upconverter DVD players will upconvert to 720 or 1080. This is adding content.

Direct TV's HD programming is 1080. No upconverting is needed.

Conclusion - Use the HDMI on the cable receiver and component (Y-pB-pR) on the DVD player.

I just installed HD directv on my system...
Feb 20, 2006 10:21PM PST

I have the Sony 50" SXRD and Harman Kardon AVR 435. I connected up the hdmi from the sat receiver directly to the TV, as well as, hooked up the component cables to the H/K receiver so I could use the switching ability of the H/K. When I compare the picture through the hdmi to the picture via component, I can't tell any difference. On some shows, the picture through component looks a little brighter than the hdmi. Both look great, so I don't think you will loose anything using the hdmi on your dvd, if it is necessary to use it for upconverting the signal. I have a question, since DVD's are in 480p, how can an upconverting DVD player change the resolution to 720p since the dvd is recorded in 480p? I am somewhat a novice myself and just wanting to know.

DVD players upconvert same as box does
Feb 21, 2006 2:40AM PST

Your satellite or cable box has a chip inside that will upconvert SD material to one resolution (720p or 1080i). The display from my cable box shows 1080i, so everthing, including 480i, is converted to 1080i. A DVD player that upconverts will do the same.

Question: Since HD DVD players will arrive shorttly, why not wait until the real thing hits the market instead of buying a player that upconverts? The HD DVD players will have better resolution, and won't you want to buy a new player anyways when the hit the market?

another way to go giffin h.d.m.i. switcher
Feb 21, 2006 1:16AM PST

What all the other folks told you is correct. But in my case I used componit vidio cables from my dish system and d.v.i. from my d.v.d. player, and the d.v.d. picture was horrible, So I bought a GIFFIN d.v.i. switcher So now I output my sat system and d.v.d. player with d.v.i. output thru the switcher and a d.v.i. to h.d.m.i. adapter at the t.v.So if you have a poor picture thru your componit vidio input then try it my way good luck and have a nice day stewart
