Stew,

Are you sure that the problem is Internet Explorer and not spyware or something similar? What seems to be the problem.

If you're certain that you need to fix IE, then ....

Have you tried "repairing" it?

Click on Start-Settings-Control Panel, then double click on the "Add/remove Programs" icon. When that loads, find the "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools" listing, highlight it, then click on the "Add/Remove" button. A small window will pop up with an option to "Repair". Place a dot/tick in that option, then click on "Ok". If you've left the backup upstallation files on the hard drive, Internet Explorer will repair itself.

If you need, there is a full download of Internet Explorer at the link below. (It's no longer available for Win98 at Microsoft.)It's an extremely large download about 80 MB and must be done on broadband. After the file is downloaded, you'll need to unzip the file into a folder, then run the "IE5setup.exe" file within. IE 5.5 will reinstall.

Hope this helps.

First, I did the repair and it didn't help. Then did "restore to previous Windows settings". Upon restarting got the message "Advanced INF Install"
error: could not locate INF file 'c:\windows\INF\msimn.inf'.

Now in my Outlook Express, it loads and receives mail ok, but upon clicking on the message, I get the "Msimm message" This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down.
The error message is "MSIMN caused an invalid page fault in
module SHLWAPI.DLL at 0177:70bd8b65.

Stew,

In looks like you need to reintall Outlook Express. Reinstalling OE can be done by using the Internet Explorer 5.5 "Custom Install" from the link I provided earlier. When the setup program starts, it will give you the option to "Install Now" or do a "Custom Install". You can then select only the options that you want to install.

There are other options...You could install Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Outlook Express 6. This would overwrite you current version and probably fix the MSMIN errors. OR, you could uninstall Outlook Express from the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs, then open the "Windows Setup" tab at the top and find OUtlook Express and UNCHECK it. Then reinstall from the Internet Explorer setup program as I mentioned earlier.

Hope this helps.

stew, not sure but suggest checking "Windows Update" to see if there are any critical updates to IE 6.

Best of luck,

IN addition, Glenn gives good advice above. Make sure to make a quick trip to the Windows Update site. There should be a number of patches to IE 6 SP1.

Keep up the safe computing.
