Have a Nook Tablet; Want an iPad
Jul 30, 2012 4:00AM PDT

So I'm having inner turmoil... I bought a Nook tablet 16GB back in May. Ended up paying over $300; this is including taxes, $30 protective case, 16GB memory card. I did a lot of research before I finally decided. The new iPad had just been release for a little bit and it was getting some bad review on overheating, slow charging, short battery life, and other little odd in things, and I'm big on buying the newest of the new when I do buy something. (I'm not always upgrading, just like getting the newest when I do)

The size of the iPad was also something, that at the time, I thought was just a little bigger than a wanted. The Nook had android apps, and having an android phone I knew there were a lot of free apps and just a large choice of apps. Also at the time, I wanted something primarily for reading, but still be able to do other things: get on Facebook, surf the internet, play games, check email, etc. And the price was cheaper of course. At a little over $300, I got a 32GB tablet (this is including the memory card) with a really nice leather case. This is compared to the newest iPad 32 GB at $599, no case. So my smart thinking cap was on.

So when I finally purchased my Nook, I was more than a little disappointed in the lack of Apps and when I research that I realized it hardly had any, hardly any were free, and in fact most are rather pricy. They didn't even have a Facebook app! ***??? They are finally starting to get more apps which is great, but they are still kind of expensive for what you get, and still no official Facebook App... Anyhow, the reading aspect of the tablet is great. It's what I originally bought my Nook for.

Here's my dilemma: after playing around with someone's iPad 2 this past week, I really want one. The touch interface seems better than the nook (at least with game apps). The screen is bigger which make using certain apps more enjoyable -I like the puzzle apps. And I just feel that I could do more with it. But I don't know if I want to sell my Nook. I know I'd be lucky to get $200 for it, and I'm not really okay with taking much more of a loss on it, just to upgrade to a glorified version of it. I'm also a big deer hunter and the Nook with its size would be more convenient taking it to the deer stand, being able to slip it into my backpack if a deer sneaks up on me. Whereas the larger iPad would be rather cumbersome to handle in situation like that.

Also if I got an iPad I know my fiance wouldn't ever let me have it at night when I like to read. He always takes my touch screen phone or iPod touch and plays games (he likes taking my iPod when he hunts too). So would it be worth it just to keep my Nook and get an iPad? It seems a little excessive, and if I can get what I want out of my Nook I will sell it, but if I can't? -Just suck it up and deal with the decision I made? I kind of wish if anything that I would have just got the Nook Color, paid $100 less and then I wouldn't feel so bad about keeping it and getting a new iPad.

Also I'm considering on waiting until the newest iPad comes out, read somewhere on the net that maybe Spring 2013? -with hopefully all the current bugs fixed.

Just looking for opinions or thoughts. Considering how much the iPads are, I might just have to stick with what I bought but they are so tempting...

-Sorry I wrote so much...

Hang onto the Nook Tablet and buy a 4th gen iPad next spring

Hi Lolita. I agree with you in preferring an iPad to the Nook Tablet, and I understand budgetary constraints. Still, you have a very decent tablet that you can do a lot with. Look at it with fresh eyes and take your gaze off the iPad until probably next March when the fourth generation is released. Frankly, I wouldn't want to go with an iPad 2 at this stage in the game. Reading is important to you, so the Retina display is preferable to the iPad 2's display, IMO.

Be patient, save your money into 2013, and then buy the best tablet that Apple or perhaps another manufacturer has to offer. Plus, things change so rapidly on the tablet scene that it's hard to know what's going to be the hottest thing going. Getting an iPad 2 now may very well lead to deep buyer's remorse in a few months. Hope you the best.

I know the feeling.

Our old e-paper black and white Kindle gets no use. I really need to send it back.

I do however have the Nook Color and it's "OK" for what it is. A little heavy in the hand but I can pop in that memory card and viola, it's a full fledged Android thing. But too finicky for most.

Test drive the Kindle Fire if you want to see a little cheaper well done Kindle.

As to the iPad 3 overheating and such, my friends don't notice it.

Don't want a Kindle...
Jul 30, 2012 5:44AM PDT

I can't return my Nook and wouldn't trade it for a Kindle. That's just the same thing. One major thing that has me really thinking about an iPad is the screen size, as far as it being bigger and being able to see things better on it (this is talking about things other than books -Like I said in my original post, the e-reader aspect is spot on. No complaints there).

I found refurbished iPad 2 32 GB for around $370 give or take. With money back guarantee and such. Would this be worth it? Then maybe a couple of years down the road upgrade to a newer iPad. The camera feature isn't something I will use much, so not really worried about that.

I didn't write I would get a Kindle.

I did note the Kindle Fire which is pretty nice. My brother has the Fire and it's pretty nice and we get a lot on Amazon along with videos, etc.

Sorry but any used iPad is not anything I could vouch for. I don't want to upset you but that's a personal choice. The new model is fine. My friends that got such are doing well. The reviews are very very picky so when there is little to nitpick, they will find anything.

Oh...

I thought when you said test drive, it meant to buy and try.

I'm not going to get a used one now. I thought that I was getting a 32gb tablet for around $370, but then when I realized it was a 16gb, I search for new ones of those: iPad 2 16gb. They are only $399. So if that's what I can afford, that's what I'll get. A new one that is from probably Best buy or Walmart. But just depends on funds. I would prefer a 32gb tablet. So I might settle for not the newest of the new, but a larger memory store. Cause I can't justify spending $600 for a tablet. My personal laptop is way more than this, but you can buy a laptop for this amount if not a little more that does way more.

Trust me, if I had the money to blow I would buy a 64gb iPad 3 tonight and then upgrade whenever the newest one comes out. But unfortunately for me I can't. So maybe the iPad 2 16gb (brand new) will satiate my hunger for an iPad for awhile, until I can afford a newer larger one a year or 2 from now.
One question: You say you don't recommend purchase the ipad used. How can anybody ever sell their used products that they took care of it nobody would ever consider buying used? Just wondering cause, I one day when the newest ipad comes out that I can afford, I would like to sell both my iPad 2 and my Nook.

Wanted to add...
Jul 30, 2012 12:47PM PDT

I just wanted to add that I love Apple products as far as ipods, iphones, and wanting an iPad SO BAD when they first come out. So I've wanted one for awhile, but now after actually getting to fool with out in a home setting (where I never got to before) I'm really really wanting one. -Doesn't help that everybody has one and its like they are dangling a dog biscuit in front of me and I'm a hungry English Bullmastiff, lol. So I always knew I would get one at some point. I just don't know how much longer I can wait, lol.

I hear you.

Take your time. Try these things out. I'm a bit lucky in that our office is doing app development so I get to test drive a few things.

Nook Reader app on iPad leaves a lot to be desired.
Aug 26, 2012 11:04PM PDT

Technify,

I agree with you--I have both the Nook Tablet and the latest iPad. I was very disappointed in the non-reader functionality of the Nook--when I bought mine they had just locked down the ability to install 3rd party apps, and I was never able to get the mail program to work with our Exchange server. BUT I love the reader, as well as the small size (about the size of a paperback) I read a lot of historical novels and non-fiction, so lookup is really important to me.

I bought the iPad just a few weeks ago, and love the range of apps, the high res screen, the fact that I got email set up in about 10 minutes.

I just switched back to the Nook for reading last night since lookup on the Nook app in the iPad is horrible. I can't even guess what they are using since I've found some very basic words missing. The FAQs on Nook suggest you 'look up the words on the internet'. Uh, yeah, kinda defeats the purpose, B&N.
