Have a laptop with two operating systems, how do I remove 1?

My mom bought a laptop. Upon starting up it goes to a black screen and says Start in Windows Vista or Start in Windows 7.... I would like to get rid of Windows Vista safely....preferably without format as I do not have any installation Operating System discs...ANY help would be greatly appreciated while I try and fix my mom's laptop for her.
