Hate getting stung at the beach? Who you gonna call?

Jellyfish Busters

Every beach-goer's icky nightmare - the jellyfish - faces a new enemy in Spain under a plan to create an armada of recreational boaters to spot the stinging blobs along the coast and summon help.

The pilot project, due to be approved Friday at a cabinet meeting, has been devised to counter an exponential rise in jellyfish populations in many areas off Spain, the world's second most popular tourist destination.

The problem stems in part from overfishing that has sapped stocks of natural jellyfish predators like tuna and turtles, and of small fish that compete with jellyfish to feed on plankton, said Josep-Maria Gili, a marine biologist who is helping to co-ordinate the project.

Another factor appears to be global warming: jellyfish are drifting close to beaches more frequently as decreasing rainfall causes a drop in cooler, fresh-water runoff from rivers - a natural barrier for the creatures, he said.

Not many in my part of the world, water too cold, but I hear they have a painful sting. Mon of War jellyfish

Notice the words that aren't bolded that contain the letter "y"

On my display they appear to be "not the same intensity" as the rest of the letters.

Is it the same on your monitor?

Y letters
Jun 12, 2007 4:46AM PDT

Hi JP,

I'm seeing it too - maybe just the power of suggestion and/or 'y' letters are "denser" from the convergence of the strokes that make up a 'y' ? Hmmm, anyway, reminds me of a phenomena I've noticed when reading certain passages in books : if you just look at the arrangements of words, the spaces *between* the words sometimes form designs - "squiggles" if you will - and this happens without even one trying to "make it happen". Not sure if that makes sense, but it's sorta like splotches or stains on a wall, or textures in concrete that appear to resemble a shape or form.

I've been stung by jellyfish a few times, really unpleasant. Vinegar
helps as a remedy, or urine in a pinch, I've been told, but never tried *that* - yet! Happy The Gulf of Mexico here has some Man-O-Wars, sometimes, but usually the other less potent guys. Still hurts a lot, though!

I've got a door that I (think I) can see a face on.

Thought about e- bay.

But I still need the door, It's the bathroom door.

I've heard those can go for quite a bit. I'd get another door with what I could sell the 'special' one for.

Letter Y and another observation
Jun 13, 2007 10:12AM PDT

I am assuming it's the lower case Y in particular. I have to wonder if it has anything to do with pixel arrangement and/or font choice. I notice a small difference in intensity of parts of letters that run diagonally. A lower case y is all diagonals. But, when I enlarge the print (using Ctrl-scroll), the intensity of all letters becomes uniform. Curiously, if I make the print very tiny, the bolded type fades enough to become less intense than the regular type. My monitor is a CRT, BTW.
