Has the sky finally fallen? Virus warning from CNN

Apr 30, 2006 11:08AM PDT
Daines was the victim of a computer virus.

He and at least one other person who clicked on the links were infected by what security experts call the first virus for Mac OS X

Apple's most recent wake-up call came last week, as a Southern California researcher reported seven new vulnerabilities. Tom Ferris said malicious Web sites can exploit the holes without a user's knowledge, potentially allowing a criminal to execute code remotely and gain access to passwords and other sensitive information.

Ferris said he warned Apple of the vulnerabilities in January and February and that the company has yet to patch the holes, prompting him to compare the Cupertino-based computer maker to Microsoft three years ago, when the world's largest software company was criticized for being slow to respond to weaknesses in its products.

In Daines' infection, a bug in the virus' code prevented it from doing much damage. Still, several of his operating system files were deleted, several new files were created and several applications, including a program for recording audio, were crippled.

Is it really an OS virus or a hole in the browser?

"several new files were created and several applications, including a program for recording audio, were crippled."... this really makes me wonder if it isn't another attack by some DRM group. No... No honest company would corrupt a persons computer maliciously now would they. Wink They wouldn't lure someone in in this case... "was browsing the Web when he clicked on a series of links that promised pictures of an unreleased update to his computer's operating system."

Will the doom sayers finally get to crow with glee?

delete QT7, re-installQT6 ?
May 8, 2006 7:13AM PDT

i know you were replying to Kevin, but since he and i were BOTH whining on the same subject, may i assume the advice might somehow apply also in some respect to me?
If so are you suggesting that apple might still have a record of my previous purchase that i COULD redownload at no cost? i have searched my hard drive in vain using (command f) and it looks like the original QT6 vers. was supplanted by the newer QT 6.3 can't say if i deleted the original install file (.dmg) in an orgy of neatness. That was too far in the past. As to the apple redownload, what is your best guess? i am still limping along in the stone age with my OS X 10.2.8
thanks

QT and Pro
May 8, 2006 10:49AM PDT

Yes, the information applies to you too BUT,

QuickTime Pro was NOT a download. It was a license number.

The only difference between having the PRO version and the FREE version is the serial number that you purchased from Apple. If you bought it at the store, you were sent a invoice and a receipt. One of them had your serial number on it. All you had to do was enter the serial number into QT and Poooof!, you had QuickTime Pro.

Good for you Pete

When I had my magic number released to me it was over the internet by Apple. Russ and I are screwed. How are we supposed to get the key back?
No way for us at all. Where is my magic number key? POOF?
Like I said before. No one can get it back.
Apple Slime buckets are too interested in iTunes and iThis and iThat!
Sounds like M$.

Pretty soon Apple will become this?

Wish I had my serial number that Apple sent me. Poof! Gone!!
How the hell are Russ and I are soposted to get this back? Ask Apple?
Apple never responds to a question.
Want to purchase something? Apple responds.
Pete, do not hold your breath contacting Apple with a question.
Morte!?

Kevin,
He is the moderator, We are the supplicants. Best we keep our comments and thoughts pleasant and respectful lest, like me you find your posts disappearing into cyberspace as being not on topic. Since in this case i DID save my receipt and invoice i am still .004 percent hopeful there may be something to be done to save my own situation. That original quicktime pro promise to make it possible to link several series of .mpg together into iMovie was what tempted me to buy it at all. Since THAT only worked marginally (ie: picture but no sound) and because THIS was because the .mpgs that had interested me were of the unsavory and old fashioned sort and from cutting-edgeApple's perspective too obsolete in technology to bother trying to include, it was pretty much a bust. i may have overlooked a warning Peter says was there. i was in such a dither and all aflutter thinking that the upgrade was going to fix all that. Of course it was, don't Steve's guys always think of and fix everything even almost before we realize we need it.

Russ, Where is my receipt? Cyberspace also! Cannot find it.
Sorry. To upgrade again to ProV7, I will need an additional $39.
Came from the horses mouth a few months ago. IE: APPLE.
And no fine print!
Who wants to go back to V6? What are we missing here?
Sorry for us dumb *****, we did not know the Queens cyberspace language.
How fluckkkking dumb of us!
Like I said before. Shame on Apple. Too interested in itunes and ipod.
Personally, I could care less about ipod or itunes. At least Apple sent out a disclosure recently warning that your hearing will be impaired using the ipod. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.
What!? Cannot hear you!! Contact my attorney!!

Connecting MPG Strings
May 10, 2006 3:13PM PDT

I can't speak to the iMovie part, but QT7 will allow the stringing of MPGs into a single file without losing the audio. Here's how I do it.

Open all of the MPGs, for example 1.mpg, 2.mpg, & 3.mpg.

Bring 3.mpg to the front, and put the playhead to the beginning.
Select none (command B)

Bring 2.mpg to the front. Select All (command A)
Click-drag 2.mpg onto 3.mpg.
Close 2.mpg

Bring 3.mpg to the front, and put the playhead to the beginning.
Select none (command B).

Bring 1.mpg to the front. Select All (command A)
Click-drag 1.mpg onto 3.mpg.
Close 1.mpg

This leaves 3.mpg, which now contains 1,2, and 3, in the proper order.
"Save as..."
Do not try "Save". it will not work, 99% of the time. "Save as... " will create a new file with .mov as the suffix.

If you have some of 3.mpg selected when you drag the other file onto it, it will replace the selected part of 3.mpg with what you dragged.
If you have the playhead somewhere other than the beginning, that is where the dragged movie will start, splitting 3.mpg.

Will iMovie play it? Don't know.
A shareware App called MPEG Streamclip will fix it if it won't.
