MS anti-spyware
Feb 2, 2005 12:57PM PST

yes indeed. I am extremely impressed with it. the first time I ran it, it found stuff that spybot and adaware had missed; stuff that i thought was long, long gone. nice traits: it scans very, very fast, it automatically updates, it has a protection feature, and you can set it for an automatic scan.

only negative is that the beta doesn't turn up cookies like adaware, etc., do.

go to the microsoft site and check out the newsgroups related to the beta for more info. some people had problems early on deleting stuff that they shouldn't have, but otherwise, the experience has been pretty positive. of course, this was somebody else's established product before MS acquired it.

Installed it, Love it. I runs automatically, upgrades and will do an automatic scan as scheduled. I think it is better than any of the other free programs out there.

I had used Giant Software before MS bought the company to use its antispyware program and i thought it it was excellent then and now.

MicroSpy SoftWare
Oct 14, 2005 9:12AM PDT

I have been using MS AnitSpyware since Microsoft made available. They apparently still consider it to be beta. I downloaded the latest update this week, and still the beta tag hangs on.
I'm using it in tandem with Spybot and Ad-Aware. It is seldom that MS's anti-spy software "catches" that which Ad-Aware considers CRITICAL OBJECTS. I don't intend to throw the MS away just yet, but thus far it seems Microsoft has simply introduced another way to chew up system resources.
Insofar as MS's ability to stop spyware from getting to the hard drive: The jury is still out. I found switching from IE to Firefox to be far more effective.

Red Herring
Oct 17, 2005 4:00AM PDT

I have used MS AntiSpyware since its beta beginnings. I am not impressed! It ties up system resouces and lets trojans and dailers by. I have seen it ignore browser highjackers and unwanted cookies. I have been using Adaware and Spybot as a backup and I am now ready to remove MS AntiSpyware. It is a worthless piece of software. I also signed up for MS OneCare Beta program in the past. I was not impressed with that program either. It was borderline spyware itself and caused too many conflicts in my system. It went the way of the Ad/Remove program.

Microsoft Anti Spyware (Beta)
Oct 22, 2005 5:02PM PDT

I agree, MS does not catch all of the bad stuff out there nor does any other single anti-spyware program. I also use Ad-aware & Spybot but have the most success with the anti-spy toolbar that Yahoo and Comcast provide. This software seems to catch more tracking cookies than the others. To sum it up; ''no one anti-spyware program'' is capable of cleaning all of spyware from one's pc. I think Microsoft has a long way to go before they can demonstrate that they have a competitive product. Although I am currently testing the MS product I will continue to use Spybot, Ad-aware and the toolbar scanner to ensure that most of the spyware is cleaned from my pc.

Does anyone know the name of the anti-spyware program Yahoo and Comcast are using in their toolbars?

Anti MSFT
Oct 14, 2005 1:26AM PDT

I am tired of hearing from people whose entire agenda is to knock MSFT. There are other OS out there and there is Apple. If you don't like MSFT, go elsewhere, it's that simple. No one is forcing you to stay here. Is it maybe because you want everything FREE, instead of paying for it? MS anti-spyware won't find anythingt because it is kept out. Ad-aware and Spybot Search and destroy, never find anything but a few cookies when it doesn't lock up the computer. As I also use Trend PC-cillin Internet Security whaich also has a antispyware scanner and all it ever finds are cookies, both along with Spyware Blaster are more than adequate. All 3 prevent things from getting in. Hope that MSFT will make it a permanent free or paid feature of their programs. Don't like it, go Apple.

my, my! a nerve has been hit
Oct 14, 2005 1:12PM PDT

The question at hand is about the whethers regarding MS's AntiSpyware. I suppose using LargeBear's logic, if you don't like or don't wanna support it (microsoft's entry) "Don't say nothin at all"
I'll reiterate my earlier comment: "the jury's still out"

Ya know... The fact the big guys get relentlessly picked on, doesn't grant them the okay to release so-so software (regardless of price) with impunity. You can be assured there are lots of folks who don't like Microsoft simply because they're big, good, successful and strong. Their bias doesn't mean they're are always wrong.

Of Course It Works
Oct 15, 2005 4:59AM PDT

Many seem surprised that MS AntiSpyware works. Now leaving aside the poor sods who believe that it won't work because its an MS product, Of course it works, It worked and worked well for years as Giant AntiSpyware before MS bought it. Now MS bought it because they knew it worked well and provided them with a programme with excellent potential for future development.Having happily used Giant for years myself I was sad to see it go to MS but just when I thought all was lost Giant's developers brought out CounterSpy,www.sunbelt-software.com the Giant had been given a new coat of paint and some nifty upgrades. The Giant Lives On.
Getting back to the poor sods. Don't turn on Microsoft because its Microsoft and don't be led around by the nose submitting to the will of the ''Lets knock it for the sake of knocking brigade''.
Where would we be without Microsoft, perhaps we would have a far superior operating system, then again perhaps we would be stuck with the pen, paper, phone.
I certainly would not be able to have a face to face on the webcam with the niece in Australia later on.
So try the damned thing yourself and be constructive in your criticism.Don't be a sheep.

Of course it may work
Oct 15, 2005 6:28AM PDT

MS bought Giant, they release an enhanced version as a BETA, and give it away to all takers. I run 3 cookie catchers, and MS/Giant catches the fewest (by far) of the three - I always run MS/Giant antispyware scans first, then the other two, for the purpose of seeing whether it be werkin'.
I'm not busting on MS for the sake of busting on them. I'm just reporting the facts ma'am. It is what it is.

What I think I'll do is, remove the MS/Giant beta and see whether I see a jump in the CRITICAL junk Ad-Aware finds.

Stay tuned.

It may well be that it may work
Oct 16, 2005 7:43AM PDT

Ok good point MS may have messed with the programme and in doing so altered its abilities.
It has to be said that there is no uniformity in the performance of AntiSpyware programmes.I have found that running a scan with say Giant followed by AdAware results in AdAware finding things which Giant failed to identify but if I reverse the sequence and run AdAware followed by Giant it discovers that which AdAware failed to capture. A further scan with say Spyware Eliminator will reveal yet other items which neither Giant nor AdAware discovered.
I mention Spyware Eliminator only as an example, I would never use the said programme as its creators have an "arrangement" with WhenU one of the worst placers of unadvised Spy/Adware whereby Spyware Eliminator deliberately ignores WhenU products.
The reality is that that in trying to out market each other some programmes are geared to catch mountains of totally trivial items which pose no danger whatsoever but in doing so suggest to us the users that programme A catches more than programme B.
I can only offer my experiences which are as follows.
To the best of my knowledge I have never had a virus, keylogger, adware.spyware nor scumware problem.
I have never had to re-install an operating system, suffered credit card fraud etc etc etc.
I use McAfee AV and Firewall PeerGuardian,CounterSpy AntiSpyware,MailWasher AntiSpam and CyberScrub to clean up.

It's OK, but...
Feb 4, 2005 11:33PM PST

1.) It doesn't work on Windows earlier than Windows 2000.

2.) Even though I downloaded the setup file, it refers back to the internet to download the actual setup file when installing it? Don't believe me? Try installing it off-line.

3.) It's a shame that Microsoft bought the best of breed vendor (Giant AntiSpy) before they could get entrenched. I am wondering if we will end up with the fox guarding the hounds scenario.

4.) Related to 3., if Microsoft wrote their operating system and internet browser better, we wouldn't have a problem with spyware.

5.) I installed it on my home computer; and it found 2 registry entries that both SpyBot and AdAware SE didn't find. Shortly after that, my McAfee stopped auto-updating. Good thing I also use clamwin.

6.) The last time I ran it, it mentioned that the copy will expire (stop working) and that I should contact Microsoft. Does this mean Microsoft will charge us, in effect, twice for trying to use their operating system? If so, I will uninstall this, and stick with SpyBot S&D and AdAware SE.

I agree with #6...
Oct 14, 2005 12:55AM PDT

I agree with #6 about Microsoft double dipping.... I use the Anti-Spyware beta program and like it better than Spybot and Adaware.... however only if it remains free....

Ever since I switched from using IE to Deepnet Explorer, I have not had any spyware on any of my 3 computers....

I don't think I can ever go back to IE... and certainly would not pay Microsoft twice for something they cause....

MS AntiSpyware vs SpyWare Doctor
Feb 3, 2005 7:26PM PST

Although it is currently free it does expire on 31st July this year and who knows if MS will charge then. Meanwhile I am running both MSASW and SpyWare Doctor. Doctor consistently returns entries in the Registry that MSASW ignores. Here is the most recent log from SpyWare Doctor that MSASW ignored.

It removed WildTangent FLAWLESSLY from MY PC. took 2 reboots to do it. Believe Clickyes2 to be part of the WT setup. You using any free programs that demand you keep this spyware? Make sure you have the latest definition updates and make sure MS anti-spyware ignores NOTHING.
