I suspect that that "error" page was phished, not really MSN Hotmail.
The address in the bar when reaching that page didn't seem to co-ordinate to usual format for Hotmail. When ever I tried to reach Hotmail via Sea Monkey (Mozilla) Bookmarks,I got that page for days!
Further, it's common practice for Phishers to try to take advantage of people NOT being terribly familiar with the new appearance of a site
(often Banks)when valid changes are made to those sites and re-direct them to look-a-likes. NEW "Live" Hotmail etc. being just such a site.
First time I tried via I.E. Favorites(3 minutes after SM w/java) I got right thru to real Hotmail with address I recognized (by110w.bay110.mail.live etc.). I think the phished page was designed to capture Hotmail login info & may have been connected in some way to a
phony message : From Postmaster@hotmail: Delivery failure. This was a fake message in the junk file saying failed to deliver a post I never sent to an unknown addie. Naturally I thought a mail worm was at play.
The normal legit version includes a statement "this message was generated automatically..."etc. The phony DID NOT have that statement! I, at first, only checked the message "properties" for originating path.
Anyway, I feared a DNS cache poisoning (constant return to same "error
page") so I flushed my DNS & changed DNS to OpenDNS for future connections. This can't hurt & is a good thing anyways.
I further deleted my existing Bookmarks (2) for Hotmail &
entered a new one I copied from the IE favorites & also deleted ALL cookies from Hotmail in my Sea Monkey. We have 2 user desktop profiles and only one (mine) was affected, the other worked just fine! Weird!
Of course I have run every scan I can & did a Hijack This Log which showed NO new or changed entries . So I think I'm OK now.
This might have been connected somehow with some users who had their Hotmail attacked/co-opted who posted here about 2 or 3 months ago, the upshot of which seemed to be that their machines were NOT infected only their Hotmail accounts were.
Hope this gives some ideas if you have problem again! But since yours "righted itself" perhaps I'm just overly paranoid!! Sandy
