Has Anyone Else Noted Hotmail Off Air?

Oct 31, 2008 4:00PM PDT

I've been trying to enter my Hotmail for 2 days now via my browser
1st thru always used Bookmark & just now via MSN.com>Hotmail.
Then following a note on left side at MSN, via www.hotmail.com thru browser. Even tried using my newer bookmark for "New Live Hotmail Sign-in".

In every case, get the same message that site is either down, site is not part of Live.Hotmail, or try back later. Am I only one?? Thanks! Confused

No, you're not alone...

A few days ago I was getting a error message that the feature I was trying to access (Hotmail) wasn't a valid MSN site (or something like that). It has now righted itself, and I think it was because MSN is rolling out wave 3(?) of it's new Hotmail.

Can you get in now?

Hi jahnjahn ! I Am Getting It OK Now But....
Nov 2, 2008 3:01PM PST

I suspect that that "error" page was phished, not really MSN Hotmail.
The address in the bar when reaching that page didn't seem to co-ordinate to usual format for Hotmail. When ever I tried to reach Hotmail via Sea Monkey (Mozilla) Bookmarks,I got that page for days!

Further, it's common practice for Phishers to try to take advantage of people NOT being terribly familiar with the new appearance of a site
(often Banks)when valid changes are made to those sites and re-direct them to look-a-likes. NEW "Live" Hotmail etc. being just such a site.

First time I tried via I.E. Favorites(3 minutes after SM w/java) I got right thru to real Hotmail with address I recognized (by110w.bay110.mail.live etc.). I think the phished page was designed to capture Hotmail login info & may have been connected in some way to a
phony message : From Postmaster@hotmail: Delivery failure. This was a fake message in the junk file saying failed to deliver a post I never sent to an unknown addie. Naturally I thought a mail worm was at play.

The normal legit version includes a statement "this message was generated automatically..."etc. The phony DID NOT have that statement! I, at first, only checked the message "properties" for originating path.

Anyway, I feared a DNS cache poisoning (constant return to same "error
page") so I flushed my DNS & changed DNS to OpenDNS for future connections. This can't hurt & is a good thing anyways.

I further deleted my existing Bookmarks (2) for Hotmail &
entered a new one I copied from the IE favorites & also deleted ALL cookies from Hotmail in my Sea Monkey. We have 2 user desktop profiles and only one (mine) was affected, the other worked just fine! Weird!

Of course I have run every scan I can & did a Hijack This Log which showed NO new or changed entries . So I think I'm OK now.

This might have been connected somehow with some users who had their Hotmail attacked/co-opted who posted here about 2 or 3 months ago, the upshot of which seemed to be that their machines were NOT infected only their Hotmail accounts were.

Hope this gives some ideas if you have problem again! But since yours "righted itself" perhaps I'm just overly paranoid!! Sandy Grin

Sorry, jahnjahn!! I Just Tried My Hotmail

& here we go again!! Same story with the page that's not part of "Live", experiencing difficulties or whatever!!! Couldn't even get in thru MSN.com link on page for Hotmail (same error page). Sad
Even saw suggestion that I should put MSN.com into my "TRUSTED" zone?? Don't think so!!

Maybe I should go to G Mail!! Just that 100+/- sites have my Hotmail addie (including here)! }Happy

I still think it's Hotmail, Sandy

The account I received the message on hadn't been upgraded to the new version yet. My other accounts had and I never got a message on them. I accessed one account a few minutes ago and got in OK, but when trying to switch to my inbox it just layed there for the longest time with "Loading..." displayed at the lower left.

Has MSN upgraded your account yet?

Not Quite Sure On Upgrading. Had Links
Nov 3, 2008 2:08PM PST

bookmarked as the OLD by110.bay110. & also had newer one showing the "live" addie. Couldn't function thru either.
Strangely, the other desktop on machine has the live addie & I have accessed successfully via that one. It's end shows "surf?2" I think it's been hit & miss on both desktops via one addie or another. I did notice, when using the live addie, the amount of junk downloaded to be cleaned in new "live" links is twice the amount of the old link in. Happy
