has anyone actually unlocked their iphone or iphone 3G??

I have a helio heat right now, but i'm thinking about buying an iphone 3g and unlocking it with ismartphone. I've heard lots of buzz from sellers on ebay, and each seller seems to have their own best way to unlock the iphone 3g. What is the best way to unlock an iphone WITHOUT causing damage to the iphone or a SIM card?

And what is up with the "old ismartphone" where you have to cut, versus the "new" way where you don't have to cut anything?

I've heard people that say ismartphone works, and then I hear others who say ismartphone adapters don't work. I'm confused!! I don't want to spend $200+ knowing that i have bought an iphone 3g and ismartphone adapter and then only to find out that I cannot unlock it!! Does anyone have an answer? Does anyone know where to buy an unlocked iphone 3g, or know someone who can unlock iphones safely? I don't trust those ebay sellers who claim they have jailbroken and unlocked their iphones and have no return policies...
