hardware raid and hdd issues

Mar 21, 2008 7:41AM PDT

RAID. Had two HDD's (SATA) and would go into BIOS to turn one on and the other off to switch back and forth between the two HDD's one had XP one had Vista. Accidently left both HDD's enabled and RAID took over. As a result it caused issues with external HDD's (Maxtor for one). Could not reformat external HDD's b/c RAID had it locked down. Couldn't use some third party backup software etc. etc. Tried to switch from RAID on to RAID auto detect in BIOS but XP HDD would then not boot and blue screen crash every time until I returned it to RAID on. Rebuilt Vista HDD and all is well with that one (which by the way the Vista HDD would boot with RAID auto detect just XP HDD would not). Problem is I do not want to reformat and reinstall XP b/c I no longer have some of the software I need to reinstall some of the programs. Any one have any idea how I can undo the effects of RAID on my XP OS? I do not want to have to boot my cpu with RAID on just to access XP as RAID on caused other unwanted problems. CPU currently booting in auto detect with Vista with no problem. Should I try a "repair" installation of XP....... if I do will I have to reinstall programs such as Roxio Media Creator. Not sure if the RAID corrupted or just altered the MBR or boot.ini in XP. Would removing the intel sata raid controller from device mananger possibly free up the HDD? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
