Question

Hardware for travel

May 12, 2014 3:51AM PDT

Will be travelling to China soon, I have an iPhone, iPod touch, NOOK and laptop. I will be purchasing a dSLR and would like to know what is the best format for sending pictures and communicating (voice or text) with friends and family while abroad?

Answer
depends on what you have available there.

If no internet, or it's very slow connections, you might be better off with extra SD chips and mail them back home with the files on them. If so, wrap in paper, then tin foil before mailing.

Answer
"best"

Wow, you would have to define the criteria and more. That sounds like a lot of work. Frankly when I use my DSLR I might upload them to a site like DropBox and share a link. I never bother with "catering" to formats as we have VLC PLAYER and other apps that can show video of almost any encoding. Sometimes you encounter a Luddite but they are not going to want to view this anyway. As to photos I might crop a few shots or add tags but "best" can actually cause folk to explode as they fall victim to analysis paralysis.

Have you checked to see if the area you are going to is 110v and not 220v?
