Harddrive failure

by emelman / August 28, 2009 12:09 PM PDT

I recently had a harddrive failure on my Dell Vostro ( built 2/08 ). It uses a 160 GB 7200rpm Western Digital HD. Dell says they only cover for a 1 year warrantee but I will contact WD to see if they warrantee separately. My questions:
1) If WD will not warrantee the HD what is the preferred replacement?
2) Is there any chance to get back data if I install a second HD in the backup Bay and try to access the original HD?

Unlikely

Unlikely that WD will warrant the drive outside of Dell's warranty, and the recovery options depend on how the drive failed.

In reply to: 1. Always ask.

I contacted WD and the response was " No limited warrantee since it was sold to a system manufacturer." So no luck. I'm buying a replacement HD.

1) Would there be any problems with this one - Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3320418AS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM. It will be going into a Dell Vostro replacing a Western Digital 1600AAJS 160 gb 7200rpm.
2) Would Spotmau be helpful to clone or repair the old HD?
Thanks

Then we'll only know later.

2. Sorry, I don't use, endorse such utilities. I seem to help others uninstall them.
