Hard drive rescue.. 911 needed badly

Mar 12, 2010 11:54AM PST

I took apart my external hard drive. it spunds like its trying to turn and then a click.. trying to turn.. then a click.. so on and so on.

If you can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

HOW IT ALL STARTED.
1. new laptop with windows 7. plugged external previously working hd in and it worked.\

2. 2 weeks go by.. my laptop no longer lets me connect.. so I begin searching online and in forums for the answer.

3. At this point.. I can see the hard drive but my computer freezes when I try to access it.

4. I then uninstall drivers, power down, reinstall, and now its there but it doesnt have any info.. just drive F.

5. I change the drive letter.

6. I run partition wizard and it finds the data.. but I have to go to work so i shut it all down.

7. come back from work and start it up. Now the computer doesnt even recognize that the hard drive is plugged in.. you know how when you plug a usb device in the computer lets you know something has been plugged in.. nope. Device manager- nope not there. '

8. I run a boot cd using partion wizard.. doesnt see it.

9. take it to GEEK guys, they plug it in.. cant get it to work so they tell me it will be about 600.00 and I have to ship it to a tier 2 data recovery center.

10. search youtube.. follow some step by step instructions on how to get the hard drive out safely.

Here I am.. spin.. click. spin..click..

One more try...

If you remove the HD itself form the USB enclose and can mount it(adapter?) to a desktop, then see if it works. If it doesn't work then, the HD has gotten a power problem or the HD itself is going bad. Your attempts leave that as an option, if you continue further, you may just reduce any data as only a service can retrieve at all. In other words you have gone as far as these things go. You put your data at risk if you continue more rescue attempts beyond what's suggested here and YouTube.

RE: Peripherals: Hard drive rescue...

There are lots of softwares that have hard drive data recovery. For example, Nero 9 has a feature for this function. If you don't have Nero, look up CNET Downloads.

You mentioned that you disambled the hard drive. If you actually opened the hard drive unit, you have probably destroyed the hard drive. From what I understand, the hard drive is destroyed when the inside is exposed to air and dust.
