Question

Hard drive not detected every time

Mar 12, 2016 7:12PM PST

I use a Lenovo Yoga 2 11 , the laptop become really slow and the laptop get stuck at the Bios screen with an error concerning the hdd and the operating system unable to load.

Thue hard drive is a Seagate 500gb Ultrathin Laptop HDD ST500LT032

I replace the hdd on the laptop but I want to retrive my files on my othe HDD.

I connected the hard drive on an external usb2 enclosure and windows is not able to recognise the drive, and when the hard drive is recognise the file transfert is extremly slow, around 50ko/ second.
I also had this error on the big files, Cyclic Redundancy error.

So my hard drive is still running but it is randomly recognised and it is extremly slow.

How can I diagnose the problem on the Hard drive ?
How can I recover my files on this hard drive ?
How can I repair my drive ? With an hardware or software ?

Thank you

Answer
That external, is it powered?

If not, try some USB Y power cable.

The time to backup your files is before they are lost. Not when the drive fails. Many folk learn this after a drive fails.

it is not powered

it is not powered, only one standart usb2 cable, it is weird because the bios cannot detect it sometimes.

(NT) Nod to a powered case or those Y power USB cables.

Answer
seatools
Mar 12, 2016 8:54PM PST

you can run seatools to diagnose the problem and possibly fix it if the drive is not too far gone.

http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

If you can get windows to recognized the drive, you can copy the files to the new drive. That is really all you can do.

"Health Status : Bad"

That means the drive is going bad so last chances are just that. Again, nod to powered case.
