Hard drive going bad?

by gnmano / December 16, 2007 3:09 AM PST

I think my hard drive is going bad. Can someone please confirm? I just did a clean install and completely reformatted my HD a couple of months ago. Computer works great 85% of the time, better than when it was new as I added more ram. However, sometimes during start-up it hangs up during the boot process - I can almost hear the HD stop. When this happens, I have hit reset or re-power the computer and it will freeze again. The only way to get running is to slap the side of the computer. I will give it a little slap during its frozen state, and it will continue with the boot-up and then it works perfect. This is an intermitent problem.

Is my hard drive freezing and me slapping the computer freeing it up?

Thanks!

backup any data you don't want to lose ASAP.

Giving a slap makes it work...classic symptom

of a poor connection. If you think you are hearing the HD spin down, I suspect the power connection is intermittent. If its the standard 4 pin type as used on IDE and some SATA drives, these pins are notorious for this. The jack end (on the power supply side) gets spread apart and doesn't grip the plug end. You can pinch these together a bit to get a better grip. Try that.
