Hard drive failure or something more serious? Hello folks.

Sep 12, 2006 2:46PM PDT

Hello folks, I have a problem with my hard drive and I'm not sure if it's failure or a SIS issue or something else.

I cannot re-format because I cannot get pass an error message on the BPOD. I cannot even get toward the recovery page.

My hard drive is now every slow; taking about 20 minutes to load windows past the POST. Taking 20 mins, just to load a web page.

I brought my PC three years ago; so I have no idea if my PC was used or not. It's not an OEM. Already, I have changed the mainboard, CPU, etc

My hard drive won't allow me (even in safe mode), to install any form of programs.

I cannot use my WiFi connection; I must rely on dial up, which makes my already slow hard drive more slower.

This is very recent and not prolonged. I have a Seagate 40 MB Hard Drive.

I have used XP utilities, to conclude if the sectors were damaged, but nothing seems to be a fault.

I haven't updated XP for a while now. Takes too long on dial up and precluded from another internet PC.

I was using Ace Uilities a month ago to un-start some programs. I will admit, I un-started a couple of SIS programs.

I knew SIS is from my mainbroad WinFast K7 series CD, but I was always ponderous why SIS had so many programs running, were I only uploaded a couple.

I may have un-started an important SIS program, and cannot start it back, because I cannot install any programs via CD and download.

I had to even use some XP system files I keep to boot.

I'm thinking on being a repair guy without the degrees, and need some help to correct this problem.

I have the "200 ways to re-start a hard drive", but it's not practical within these situation.

What do you do when you cannot re-format, install softwares, install devices (when I try, I get an error message from the device manager), use an internet connection besides dial up, and simply correct this problem without asking for help?

Any, words is very much appreciated. Thanks

Such drives are over 15 years old. How did you manage to get XP installed on such a small drive?

I think you found what needs replacing. Link to data on this old drive.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seagate_Technology notes these 40 MB drives are from the 80's.

Sorry about that. Of course you cannot get XP on a 40 MB drive. It was a type incorrection.

40 GB hard drive; my mistake.

Even 40GB drives can be many years old.

Check the date on it and run a DRIVE FITNESS TEST from it's maker.
