ENCLOSURE ISSUES:
Different enclosures sometimes require different jumpering. Try MA or CS.
USB ISSUES:
You should have your XP updated to SP2 and have the latest motherboard/chipset drivers from your computer maker's website.
NEVER SHAKE ANY HARD DRIVE. YOU'LL DO MORE DAMAGE.
RECOVER DATA FROM HD:
Try installing the HD internally as a slave. Does it show up?
Hi,
My USB external enclosure's power supply recently went crazy on me whereby it would restart itself every 15 seconds(it was like clockwork). Sadly, I had a hard drive plugged in at the time.
I was able to get another enclosure and plugged said hard drive in and turned on the power. Yet, there is no sound of the hard drive starting up and now every 10 seconds or so, the power supply resets itself. I've plugged in an optical drive into the enclosure and there is no problem with it. So, the new enclosure's power supply is functioning properly.
Lastly, I gently shook the hard drive and noticed a clicking sound.
My guess is that it's a head crash but I'd like to get an opinion from experienced people. I had backed up of some of the data on the drive but the drive is 120GB and so I don't have a backup of everything.
So, I would just like to know if my problem is a head crash or not, and whether professional help will be sufficient to recover the data.
This is a long post and I thank you for your patience.
