Hard Drive Enclosure problems

Jun 30, 2006 3:36PM PDT

I lost the motherboard on old computer. Instead of replacing motherboard, I bought a new computer and a hard drive enclosure to attach to new comp, creating an external hard drive.

Problem is that Access is denied to the Documents and Settings file under my name. I had it password protected on my old computer. Is that the problem? If so, is there a way to bypass that? I need to get to these files (photos and business docs) to move them onto new computer.

Thanks in advance!
J

Instructions for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004?
Jul 1, 2006 4:37AM PDT

Thank you for the link! That seems like just what I need, but the instructions are for XP home edition or professional edition. Do you have a recommendation for Media Center Edition 2004?

When I click on Properties it doesn't have a Security Tab. The tabs are General, Sharing, Customize.

Thanks in advance!

To get the security tab to show...
Jul 1, 2006 6:32AM PDT

To reveal the Security tab, open Windows Explorer, and choose Folder Options from the Tools menu. On the View tab, scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings and clear (click) the check box next to "Use Simple File Sharing." Click OK to apply the change, and you should now have a Security tab when viewing the properties of a file on an NTFS volume.

The instructions apply to XP, all versions.
