You lose 40MB every time you start up?

Is this accumulative? What size is the drive and is it partitioned?

Classic will take up RAM when it is running, not HD space, so I doubt this is the problem. Unless you are actually using Classic, there is really no need to have it running in the background. It will launch automatically if needed.

As mentioned in another thread, Virtual Memory uses a lot of HD space as it runs the System and all your apps.

If the 40MB is recovered at each restart, then I would not be too concerned about it. However, if 40MB is lost at each restart and the effect is accumulative , it is not going to take you long to run out of HD space.

Do you have any sort of "Undelete" type program running. Something like Norton that will allow you to recover files that have been deleted. They use a lot of HD space.

You may want to read the first reply carefully and tell if such an application is in use. If you don't reply to responders directly then we're left wondering if an item noted was the cause.

For me such can be simple. I look for files created in the last 24 hours.

I had this problem.

What I had done foolishly was rename the Home Folder (the icon of a house in the Finder menu) which threw the thing off and I had to reinstall OS X.

I couldn't find an alternative way around that, but my MacBook was new then so I didn't lose too much. Here's to hoping you have neither this problem nor need to reinstall OS X.

Udayan.
