hard drive cleaners

Hello: Wondering if it is safe for a "newbie" so to speak to use one of the hard drive cleaners (such as Evidence Eliminator); is there a danger of losing important and necessary files or even programs AND if it is OK, is there a free download of any similar service. Thanks....Mill

Mill,

As a "newbie" most of the tools you need to keep your Harddrive in order are already installed. I would suggest using these as a learning tool before expanding to more robust applications.

As for Evidence Eliminator. STAY AWAY.

Never have liked Hi-Pressure sales and this application offers nothing that you already don't have.

why clean??

"cleaners" only wipe free space on your hard disk so that previously deleted programs cannot be resurrected - so unless you want to delete all traces of previous data on your hard disk there is no need - there is no other advantage in "cleaning" a disk other than the above - there are no performance gains - just total loss of data - data you will also not have access to at a later date should u delete a program by mistake!.

I use 2...Window Washer and SurfSecret and have never had a problem. Search Google for trial download sites!

Cleaning out unnecessary files is different from cleaning the Registry - so stay clear of Registry cleaners unless you know what you are doing because you're just wasting time downloading products you will never use, or don't know how to use - and in that case, clearly you shouldn't use them anyway.

What is the problem you are trying to solve? as Mark said. It is horses for courses from the software out there which is available outside your O/s facilities, but again, what are you trying to clean?

Mo
