Hard drive allocation

Oct 10, 2004 10:25AM PDT

I have a 70 gig hard drive. I use Windows XP. My nieghbour(a card carrying MS tech)for some reason split it into 2 halves. I needed help and didn't ask at the time. Now the first half is almost full. How can I change this. I can ask him, but I don't learn as much as when I do it myself. Again I appreciate any and all help!!

You can right click on My Documents and select Properties. There's a Move button. Maybe D would be a nice place?

You can move all your TEMP files to the D: drive as well as the Virtual memory.

Go to Control Panel/System and under Advanced/Environment Variables set TEMP and TMP to go to the d: drive, create a TEMP folder for them on D: first.

In System under Advanced/Performance SETtings go to Advanced and under Virtual Memory select Change. Reduce the Paging file to 10MB on the C: drive and create a large one on D:.

If you can move a lot of data files over to D: this may be all you need to do. Could be moving My Documents (as Robert recommends) is enough, but if you still are low on space on C: start installing new programs on D: instead of C:. If you have installed any large programs (encyclopedia's for example) on C: you might remove them and put them on D:.

go to start ,go to explore, look for the other part of the hard drive "E", "F" etc., and click on it. that`ll bring you to the other half. you can go back and forth that way, but get rid of any unnecessary data, by putting it on a cd , dvd, and then deleting what ever isn`t needed anymore.

Hi Brad!

I have done that to my hard drives using a program called "PartionMagic" from PowerQwest?, now owned by "Symantec". It is called now "Norton PartitionMagic? 8.0". I'm shore there are some other programs that do the same, but this is the one I'v been using and does a good job at that. I don't know any other eazy way of doing that job. It will repartition your drive, or just reclaims the other patition to the main drive and you will then have only one big drive again. CAUTION! Don't forget first to back up wath ever you have on the second drive, or You will loose it.
