Try defragging in Safe Mode.

Likely some program/event is writing to the hard drive which causes the defrag to restart.

Is the message a Warning or simply a notice that something has accessed the drive and defrag will restart??

warning
Feb 22, 2006 12:44AM PST

hi
i use diskeeper 10 and the message i get is

Warning

The overall health of volume C: is degraded

The overall health is at ''Warning'' level for the following
reasons:

1. The volume is heavily fragmented. The average number of
fragments per file is 1.03.

and another thing is if i do a virus scan the HD makes sum loud clicks and with these sometimes makes the pc freeze :S

H1tman, Which Operating System

It sounds like you're using XP or 2000. If so, then try running "Error Checking/Chkdisk" first using the instructions in the link below:

How To Run 'Error Checking/Chkdsk' On Win2000/XP

You might also need to follow the steps in the link below to clean up the computer first:

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6122-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=158153&messageID=1758464&tag=

If you're using Windows 98/ME, then follow the instructions in the link below:

What Do I Do When Scandisk and Defrag Won't Run In Win9.x/ME

HOpe this helps.

XP Doesn't Have 'Scandisk' and Don't Use Diskeeper..
Feb 22, 2006 2:51AM PST

Try the standard Windows Defrag utility..Does that allow you to defrag?

XP SP2 doesn't have the "Scandisk" program like Windows 98/ME. Instead, it uses "Error Checking/Chkdsk" to scan the hard drive for errors..It requires the computer to be restarted and runs outside of Windows after a reboot..If you haven't rebooted and let Chkdsk run per the instructions I gave previously, then you haven't run it correctly.

On the other hand, it DOES sound like the hard drive could be headed south. The "clicking" noise you mention may not be a good thing. Make sure you've backed up all your important files.

Hope this helps.

Installing a new drive...

Considering what you are experiencing, I'd do a new install with your system CDs. (You did keep those in a safe place, right?)

If you HD was in good health, you'd use the utility the new drive came with to format and copy all your files.
