Keyhoti,
Since this thread is a better location and basically a duplicate of that in the "Tips" thread, I'll post my response here and delete our posts in "Tips". (I'm trying to keep that thread as "clean" as possible.

My favorite four letter word is "FREE"....
Sorry, I've never used the "System and Internet Washer" program but then again, I've always tried to keep the programs installed on my computer to a minimum. (Spybot S & D and Ad-Aware will also remove "tracks" and are necessary for other purposes.)In addition, I would rather remove some items such as 'cookies' manually as much as possible. I am familiar with the "Tune-Up Utilities" program and it works well, but I prefer to use a free registry cleaner. Even when using registry cleaners,(I prefer EasyCleaner and RegCleaner) I tend to use them very carefully. Almost to the point of manually reviewing each entry that is identified so I know exactly what's being deleted.
I've seen too much damage caused by "automatic" removal programs, so I like the deliberate method of manual removals.
Just my preference. It may not be your's.
Hope this helps.
Grif
I hope it is in order to start this thread with something I posted in your "tips" thread Grif, but I found myself getting a bit lost in the amount of stuff which has been posted, thought others might be finding the same and think that what I have to suggest is worthwhile.
Anyway:
I also found myself getting rather lost when I tried manually deleting stuff, but about a year ago I came across "System and Internet Washer", gave it a go, then bought it and have been running it ever since with a lot of success, including erasing "free space", with complete ease and safety (you can enable and disable whichever features you don't want to run).
Newbies like myself might also give "TuneUp Utilities" a trial run, albeit that a few features overlap, but many more don't and it can defrag and repair the registry, for instance.
During my 18 months of computer operation I bought stuff which turned out to be a waste of time and money, so I am honing my suggestions down to only that stuff I have ended up with and can recommend ... to save others wasting money and maybe installing harmful programs.
Elsewhere I also suggested "Spybot" (free), "Ad-Aware" and "Registry Healer" (which has an advanced mode that let's you easily access the registry, should you need to locate a particular entry).
In that context: I realise that the programs I've suggested may be somewhat superfluous if you reall know what you are doing, but as I don't - and never really will fully - I find it good to have automated stuff I can trust.
