Happy Birthday CNET - 20 Years old wow!

Jul 22, 2015 3:19AM PDT

I started using the CNET site many years ago and have just received an e-mail mentioning that it's CNET's 20th birthday. Wow that's a superb achievement.

Well done to CNET and the superb team that have always been great and friendly. In 1995 when CNET started I was half way through my National Diploma in Computer Studies at Warrington College, and I think it wasn't until about 1997 that someone introduced me to Download.com when I was doing my HND in Software Engineering at University of Central Lancs in Preston. Since then I've regularly used CNET and Download.com for various things, over the years Download.com has always been a great source to find useful applications.

Thank you to the superb team at CNET for a great 20 years, and hopefully here's to another 20 more!

Thank you from all of us here at CNET, Darren!

I started at CNET back in 2000 during the days when we breathed and bled green, yellow, and red. Remember those days? Here is a snapshot of what CNET look like when I started here:

It has been a wonderful journey so far. From the crazy dot com bust all the way through today, we've come a long way. The people behind the scenes at work is what makes CNET what it is today and what a great place to work and to be part of incredible team. What can I say, I love CNET! Grin

Of course there is the CNET community members like yourself, Darren. Those who show their passion around tech and always willing to share their knowledge to help another person out. I truly appreciate you and all the members of our community. And I want to say Thank you! Your loyalty to our brand means a lot to all of here at CNET!

Thank you Darren for the Birthday wish!

Kind regards,
-Lee

Did you come in after....

...Philip Dyer was there? That was all a long time ago. Some rough time there before CBS stepped in and bought it.

I was with CNET at the time.

When CNET bought out ZDNet. I joined Philip's team who was managing ZDNet's Community and he was my manager at the time. Those were really rough times, especially with the dot com bust. I saw massive layoffs everywhere and it was a sad and a scary time when you didn't know when you were going to be handed the pink slip. Sad

I remember that

and CNET stock dropped under $2 per share and I think was in danger of being delisted from stock exchages too. Makes me feel old remembering.

The 2000 site, some interesting things!
Jul 24, 2015 5:23AM PDT

Just had a quick look at the old CNET - I remember the old yellow colour scheme! Some of the links on that page are quite funny now - the Palm Vx - weren't they made by Psion (which originally made games for the ZX Spectrum), also going back further to October 22 1996 (the first time Wayback machine noticed CNET) - and you have an advert at the top for Internet Explorer 3.0 - "Better? You Bet!" what a slogan for a new web browser at the time and they're still trying to make it better now although as of Windows 10 IE will be no more, instead it'll be Microsoft Edge/Project Spartan. Some other interesting things worth noting is the mention of "Office 97 Beta", and "Windows 95 Nightmares" of course now it's "Windows 8" that's the nightmare!

It's always fun to revisit old sites and see how any Website evolved overtime!

Bring back a lot of memories for me! Happy

Congratulations CNET!

Man! I actually remember those colours and that page theme. I've availed of the knowledge, recommendations and software at CNET for a large part of its 20 years and it's simply incredible the way you've matured and developed into today's well-oiled machine. I love the site and the work you guys 'n gals do and look forward to more of the same. CNET has been the main source of all things computer for me for a long time. I consider today's team as good as, if not better than, any of the past. Thank you!
