open a webpage and then go to View (in the menu bar) then source.
This is all of the source code to the webpage (which copying is a violation of copyright laws).
Depending on (primaraly) how the page was written, when you make your selection and then copy your selection, much of this code (to keep it simple) is copied into your clipboard as well.
When you paste it into Word, Word uncodes it and displays it as you see it into a Word document. How the page is written determines how fast Word can 'rewrite' what you have copied.

I often try to save parts of websites by copying into word.
