Hanging Windows 7 ultimate (32 bit) Installation

Mar 26, 2010 10:00AM PDT

I am trying to install windows 7 ultimate 32-bit version to my old PC. The installation hangs at one stage: ?Expanding Windows Files (5%)? It says I am not connected to any network, even though I am.

Previously, I had Vista Home Premium (32bit). Due to some problem (Virus I guess), PC slowed down? and finally dead. It was not even booting to Windows. Then I purchased this Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and formatted both C (220 GB) and D (10 GB) drives using that.

System: Dell Dimension E520, Intel 6420 processor with 4GB RAM and 250 GB HDD.

Thanks for suggestions and help,

Sri

Just a guess.

It's lacking network drivers. By removing Vista completely, you also removed any ability to connect to a network.

Without those the installation cannot connect to any network.

I don't know how that can be resolved.

Network connection is not needed...
Mar 27, 2010 5:34AM PDT

Since a network connection is not required during Windows installation, that is not something that needs corrected. Rather, I would disconnect any/all peripherals and cables, aside from the keyboard/mouse but including the network connection, and try again. If the problem persists, wipe the hard drive clean using DBAN (assuming there are no files left on the drive you need/want), and then try the Windows installation again.

Hope this helps,
John

DBAN...

You can click here to read more about, and download, DBAN. In short, you'd want to save a copy to a flash drive, CD, etc, boot to it, and follow on-screen prompts to erase the contents of your hard drive. Full documentation/instruction is available from the developer at the above site.

no bootable partition
Mar 30, 2010 10:15AM PDT

Hi,

I installed DBAN in USB falsh drive and tried to boot my PC. It says no bootable partition in table. Do I need Partition Manager in the USB drive to boot?

I tried, in command prompt, bootrec diskpart/, it doesnot show C drive. It dhows only disk 1 : 3.8 MB size and all others 0.

Thanks,

Sri
