half my picture is overexposed with a line down the middle

When I load pictures from my canon sx40 onto my computer, I get a line down the middle and half the picture is in negative.

Are you saying the picture is OK when viewed on the camera LCD?

If so, something is happening when you transfer the image to your computer.

Are you using some type of software to load the image to your computer?
If so, use a card reader instead to read the memory card.

Have you tried a different card?
See if a friend can read the card on their computer.

What capacity is the card?
Anything that is over 2 gig is a SDHC card and requires a SDHC card reader.
