Hackers moving faster: report

Nov 18, 2003 4:09PM PST

The Internet Risk Impact Summary Report, published by Internet Security Systems (ISS), finds that overt attacks against computer systems increased 15% in the third quarter of 2003 compared to the previous quarter. Security events, or confirmed attacks or events that present unusual risk, rose 9%. The ISS believes that black hat hackers are catching up with security research, enabling them to develop exploits shortly after the disclosure of a vulnerability. In one instance, exploit code for a Cisco vulnerability appeared two days after the flaw was announced. ISS documented 823 new viruses in the third quarter, an increase of 26%. ISS added 725 new vulnerabilities to its X-Force database, a decrease of two from the second quarter; 218 were classified as high risk, 369 as medium, and 138 as low. The report uses data from intrusion detection systems and network sensors around the world.
